About this audiobook

The New York Times bestseller—for fans of All the Light We Cannot See!

From the bestselling author of Truths I Never Told You, Before I Let You Go, and the The Warsaw Orphan, Kelly Rimmer’s powerful WWII novel follows a woman’s urgent search for answers to a family mystery that uncovers truths about herself that she never expected.

“Fans of The Nightingale and Lilac Girls will adore The Things We Cannot Say.” —Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author

In 1942, Europe remains in the relentless grip of war. Just beyond the tents of the refugee camp she calls home, a young woman speaks her wedding vows. It’s a decision that will alter her destiny…and it’s a lie that will remain buried until the next century.

Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now fifteen and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate.

Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears. Where Alina used to measure time between visits from her beloved, now she measures the spaces between hope and despair, waiting for word from Tomasz and avoiding the attentions of the soldiers who patrol her parents’ farm. But for now, even deafening silence is preferable to grief.

Slipping between Nazi-occupied Poland and the frenetic pace of modern life, Kelly Rimmer creates an emotional and finely wrought narrative. The Things We Cannot Say is an unshakable reminder of the devastation when truth is silenced…and how it can take a lifetime to find our voice before we learn to trust it.

Don’t miss Kelly Rimmer’s newest novel, The Paris Agent, where a family’s innocent search for answers brings a long-forgotten, twenty-five-year-old mystery featuring two female SOE operatives comes to light!

This book sucked me in and warmed my heart. I began reading it and when I couldn’t take it home, it was imperative to find out what would happen, so I found this audiobook. The narrator does a great job (to my ears) with accents and inflection. This story was well balanced emotionally, and the highs and lows were fascinating. It was a bit predictable, and the wording was sometimes repetitive, but I thoroughly enjoyed the tale Even once I knew where it was going, I was grateful to be drawn along to the lovely and complete ending. Well worth the time spent reading and listening to it.

I was looking for a book to read set in WWII, and this was suggested. It is so well written I felt I was actually in Poland at parts. Particularly interesting to me as my father’s side is from Poland and we lost several family members during to war. But this family’s story is both heartbreaking and heart warming. I felt I knew all the members.

(Spoilers) While I enjoyed this book, and the narration was fantastic, I found one aspect so unbelievable that I couldn't get past it. The fact that Alina lived her whole life in America without ever trying to reach out to her sister, who was left in Poland. (That isn't even part of the storyline) The book says that she wrote thousands of letters to Amelia but sent them to the wrong address. It also states that Amelia was still living in the same tiny town that she had left her in, so it wouldn't have taken very much effort to find her once communism fell in Poland. While I enjoyed the storyline and the characters, I just can't get past this plot failure. I think anyone with siblings would agree with me that as soon as communism had fallen in Poland, Alina would have been on a plane to find her sister and Amelia.

I have wearied of novels that take place in the past and in today’s setting as well because I am usually drawn to the historical story more than the preset-day story. The Things We Cannot Say is the exception!! I fell in love with the Polish characters of 1940 and how both Jews and Christians suffered when the Nazis invaded their beloved country. But I was equally drawn to Alice’s contemporary struggles of loving and raising a son on the spectrum while honoring the most difficult request of her dying grandmother. I was thrilled when the story turned to Alice and grateful to return to Alina and Tomas. I highly recommend this beautifully crafted novel!
