About this audiobook

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
A GOOD MORNING AMERICA COVER TO COVER BOOK CLUB PICK

“Rich, dark, and intricately twisted, this enthralling whodunit mixes family saga with domestic noir to brilliantly chilling effect.” —Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author

“A haunting, atmospheric, stay-up-way-too-late read.” —Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone comes another page-turning look inside one family’s past as buried secrets threaten to come to light.

Be careful who you let in.

Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am.

She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libby’s life is about to change. But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them.

Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone.

In The Family Upstairs, the master of “bone-chilling suspense” (People) brings us the can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets.

Editor's Note

Will keep you guessing…

Libby Jones doesn’t know she’s an adopted child until she receives a house that’s been kept in a trust for her from her birth parents well after they died in said house by apparent suicide. But what really happened within those walls?

I was riveted. I go through 2 books a week. All pretty good. But this one was amazing. I’ll read more books by her.

I really got pulled into the story, wanting to see how the different main characters and storylines fit together. I liked how sometimes the reader was given foreshadowing to the ‘official’ mood reveal of information but also sometimes taken down different paths before the final version of things was laid out. Most of the main characters felt complex and real. Though, I sometimes wish there was more to explain the thinking and motives of certain characters, there would be no way to have done that with the writing style the author chose. And if she had taken on a writing style to let the reader see into those other characters, I think the book would have suffered because I think her approach to telling to story is part of what made it an enjoyable read.

Maybe one of Lisa Jewells best pieces, which is difficult to say as I’ve enjoyed most of hers, but this one is a rollercoaster of a story with wholesome events and creepy, stalker family stories all rolled into one.

This was my first Lisa Jewell book and it did not disappoint. Very well written, held my attention and kept me guessing. Each of the plot twists came as a surprise. I could appreciate the different perspective / characters that served as narrators.. great read over all.

In a large house in Chelsea a baby is crying in a cot. The baby seems cared for but in the kitchen are three dead bodies.I have only read one other book by Lisa Jewell and enjoyed it so I don't know why I haven't read more. This book I also really enjoyed. The story is told by Henry, son of Henry and Martina Lamb and what happens when friends move in a make themselves welcome. Libby has inherited the house and wants to know more about her family. Lucy is doing her best to get to England with her two children. This story is so compelling. A very easy read with plenty going on and with twists along the way. I found I read this book very quickly wanting to know what had happened and why, and how everybody was connected to each other.I really enjoyed this thriller and will certainly read more by Lisa Jewel.

Definitely enjoyed this more on audio than reading with my eyes with my own ecopy. There are some heavy topics, so check TW’s. But otherwise, this would be typical Lisa Jewell brand of F*cked up and I’m always here for it! Told in multiple POV’s and alternating timelines.

I’ve watched enough documentaries about cults and how they start to find the basis of this “out there” tale very believable.

Unraveling who’s who is confusing at first, and even after you’ve figured it out you reach another level of the story that makes you question it all over again.

At least one unreliable narrator keeps you guessing right up to the end, and some questions are just never answered …not in a bad way…but in a way that will keep you turning parts of the story over in your head, left with a lingering sense of dread long after the “happy” ending.

Absolutely stunning narration! This trio could read to me anytime. I don’t think this has as many twists and turns as people will think it does.

    But damn.

    I enjoyed it.

I’m a big fan of books about cults and this inadvertently delivered. It gave me murder, it gave me stunning writing, and characters to root for the whole time.

This doesn’t have profound plot twists (as any mystery reader could tell you) and it’s not the most delightful and shocking thriller. It’s a damn good domestic that you can listen to and enjoy. Just turn your brain off a bit? At least that’s what I did. Sounds heartless, I know. But again, this wasn’t something that surprised me. I just enjoyed the ride.
