About this audiobook
“A feast of a read... I finished A Good Neighborhood in a single sitting. Yes, it’s that good.” —Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Small Great Things and A Spark of Light
In Oak Knoll, a verdant, tight-knit North Carolina neighborhood, professor of forestry and ecology Valerie Alston-Holt is raising her bright and talented biracial son, Xavier, who’s headed to college in the fall. All is well until the Whitmans—an apparently traditional family with new money and a secretly troubled teenaged daughter—raze the house and trees next door to build themselves a showplace.
With little in common except a property line, these two very different families quickly find themselves at odds: first, over an historic oak tree in Valerie's yard, and soon after, the blossoming romance between their two teenagers.
A Good Neighborhood asks big questions about life in America today—what does it mean to be a good neighbor? How do we live alongside each other when we don't see eye to eye?—as it explores the effects of class, race, and heartrending love in a story that’s as provocative as it is powerful.

“While Faulkner’s story veers off into the traditional grotesquerie of Southern Gothic literature, Fowler’s culminates with injustices that are painfully easy to imagine because they continue to be a part of our contemporary lived experience.” — Washington Post
“A timely story about what happens when we fail to consider how our actions affect others and the tragedy that can befall us if we can’t coexist with those whose values are different from our own.” — Atlanta Journal

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5An interesting take of a world dealing with injustice. Compelling!!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I know all books don’t need to have a happy ending but as the writing was good, the end of the plot was so cliché. I listened to it on audio and the narrator wasn’t as true to the story as it should have been read. The beginning and middle of the plot was wonderful though, I almost recommended this to a lot of friends.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Very disappointed in the ending. I think it sends the wrong message about injustice.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Narrow minded and dated. The distaste of self hate within the author is evident and leaves you wanting mouthwash.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a good and sad story. Good awareness of how the law works for one side
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Awful, there is no hope, completely depressing. At first I thought this was just a young forbidden love but it’s chilling, you keep turning the page in desperate need for the story to get better but it doesn’t, not even the epilogue can summarize any goodness for me personally. I feel completely heartbroken like I need therapy after reading this because is is that hopeless
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Real stuff!
Liked the narrator and the story line.
Recommend it! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Lots of topics that can be a little sensitive for others, but please keep and open mind, this book was super impactful, it hurt so much to finish it, even now the book ended was a huge WOW
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5TRIGGER WARNINGS! All of them, it was good but made me very uncomfortable at times.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It was slow at times for me but it picked up kn the end
