About this audiobook

For fans of Liane Moriarty, Liv Constantine and Lisa Jewell, a twisty psychological thriller about a savvy second wife who will do almost anything to come out on top from the New York Times bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes.

Being the second wife can be murder . . .

""Once a cheat, always a cheat,"" they say. Marcie Maddox has worked hard to get where she is after the illicit affair that started her new life a few years ago. But her world of country clubs, yachts and sumptuous houses in Savannah, Georgia, isn’t easy to maintain, no matter how hard she tries. Nor is keeping her husband, Jason, truly interested.

So, when Jason’s boss brings home a hot new wife from his trip to London, the young Mrs William Radford IV isn’t quite the souvenir everyone expected. Sexy, drop-dead gorgeous and black—Keisha quickly usurps Marcie’s place as the beautiful second wife. But when Marcie sees the extra spark in the room when Keisha and Jason are together and their obvious, magnetic attraction, the gloves come off.

Revenge is best served cold, but in the steamy Savannah heat, blood runs so hot that this summer it might just boil over into murder.

Excellent story, loved all the characters. Unexpected turn of events and the ending didn't disappoint. Narrator was fantastic! I highly recommend this one and I can't wait to move on to the next book by this amazing author.

This book is nothing like described! Based on the description I thought it would be a juicy "wives" tale of betrayal and intrigue. At first it seemed that way but then devolved into a lesbian romance - very explicit. Ugh! I generally avoid soft porn and "romance" relatively easy since such books are usually so labeled. But not in this case! It is a lesbian soft porn romance. So I am letting others know so they won't be misled.

Slow, more of a drama than a thriller. Full of clichês. Only got the action going on the last chapters.

Unlikeable characters. Too twisted a plot. The organ of the heart was constantly fluttering or racing or some such thing. It might as well have been a main character.way too much introspection and exposition.

Page turner, writer weaves intrigue but this story was spoiled by the stereotypical evil voodoo trope, for me. Very hard to finish, because after the voodoo was introduced into the story there were no more surprises, just cringe after cringe after cringe cliches.

Very well done!! Good author, good story. A bit off the charts for credibility, but oh well. With a book like this we listen for entertainment, and this book is definitely entertaining!

Once again, I find myself of two minds about a Sarah Pinborough novel: like the previous one I read, Behind Her Eyes, this book focuses on quite unlikable characters - and there is a lot of them here - while offering an intriguing story that is part mystery, part social study and part romance, with a dash of voodoo superstition thrown in for good measure. It’s this apparent lack of focus on a specific theme that mostly baffled me, making me wonder more than once whether the author was unsure about the kind of story she wanted to tell: in the end, of course, every apparently scattered piece of the puzzle falls into place and delivers an intriguing ending, but for me the journey was a difficult one, a fact that somehow soured my enjoyment of the overall story.Marcie Maddox is a younger second wife: her husband Jason took her away from a life of hardship and launched her into the high society of Savannah, where Marcie did everything in her power to be accepted by the closed circle of the town’s elite. When Jason’s older partner, widower William Radford, comes back from a European vacation with a new wife who soon becomes the center of attention, Marcie’s world feels endangered: Keisha is young and attractive, and Marcie soon notices that Jason seems inclined to flirt with her, which raises all sorts of alarms for Marcie, who knows better than anyone else how easy it is to steal another woman’s husband…This is just the premise of a story that becomes more and more complex as we get to know the main characters better, and moves slowly but surely toward the uncovering of the web of lies, deceit and secrets underlying what looks - on the surface - like a perfect, carefree world. As I said at the beginning there is not a single one of the main characters deserving of sympathy: Marcie hides a shady past which hangs over her like a cloud, and for this reason she tries very hard to fit in into Savannah’s society, even though she’s younger than the other wives in her circle and secretly despises them for their “old matron” attitude and the skin-deep goodness exercised in charity work and soup kitchens for the poor. Keisha comes from an underprivileged family and wants to escape both their poverty and their psychological hold on her: her marriage to William is the ticket for the new life she wants, but she can hardly wait for her aging husband’s demise to enjoy newfound freedom and prosperity to the fullest. The men fare little better, what with Jason not being a model of honesty and integrity - and as the story moves forward we discover more unsavory truths about him - and William being prone to sudden mood swings that soon reveal an overbearing attitude and a cruel streak targeting Keisha just as much as it did with his previous wife, whose presence seems to hang still in the house, very much Rebecca-like. The secondary characters, mainly the wives, spend most of their time by shopping, being pampered in beauty parlors and indulging in gossip, portraying a kind of lifestyle that feels so empty and useless that it’s easy to wonder whether it’s a worthy exchange for all the material comforts they enjoy.Where the characters did little - if anything - toward my enjoyment of the story, I very much appreciated Pinborough’s description of the sultry Savannah background, plagued by an oppressive heat that seems to weigh down the overall feeling of uselessness and despondency in which the characters look mired. And of course the slow unfolding of the buried secrets and the sequence of quite unexpected twists and turns peppering the final part of the novel helped me better appreciate a story with which I struggled a little, particularly in its middle, although - when all is said and done - I have to admit I expected something more, or something different. Or both.Still, I have not given up with Sarah Pinborough’s works, because her narrative style is one I find quite compelling, so my hope is that this was just a “hiccup” down the road and that the next book will prove nearer to my tastes.

I wasn’t overly impressed with Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough, but then I read 13 Minutes and I was blown away. I was excited to read Dead To Her. Unfortunately, I didn’t find it quite as memorable or thrilling as expected. None of the characters are memorable or likable. It felt like reading about the bunch of people who have money and like to sit around judging people who don’t have money. They were definitely some entertaining moments, but overall jealousy and snarkiness got all really quickly. The blurb for the book even sort of sounds like beginning of a show on ID. I love watching ID, but it’s just 2 different types of media to sound so similar.

Predictable. Marcie Maddox and Keisha Radford are the second wives of wealthy men living in Savannah, GA. Marcie and Jason seem happily married, but Marcie starts to suspect him of having an affair. Keisha wants William, an old man to die so she can get her hands on his fortune. Both Marcie and Keisha have secrets buried in their past. Marcie’s first husband died, Keisha believes she is cursed and also believes in voodoo. Jason’s father had a criminal issue, and now, Jason seems to be in trouble. This book has a lot of sex, so if you aren’t interested in reading that, avoid this book. There was a weird drug enhanced orgy scene, and traces of voodoo throughout the book. The conclusion of the book was completely predictable.

I surprised myself finding this wasn't a Pinborough book that I cared much about. The characters were to shallow to pretend to like. Marcie was just that badly developed that I wasn't going to like her nor could I strongly dislike her. The build up from Marcie....I bet it's Jason....it's that damn Jackie, she's always wanted to get back at me, it was the maid...it was ....ugh. Twist and turns? Well maybe, but you see them coming. Sorry to say, one of those "I just don't care" books from someone I didn't expect.

The Short of It:This story was a breath of fresh air. A little racy, a mystery to solve and all surrounded by the antics of the rich. The Rest of It:Marcie’s marriage to Jason Maddox has her living in a big house, attending big gala type events, mixing at the club, and finds herself constantly comparing herself to the rich around her. Will she ever fit in? You see, Marcie has a past. Some of which Jason is aware of but the one thing she has kept hidden for a very long time, comes to the surface and threatens the lifestyle that she has come to embrace. To further complicate things, Jason’s partner, William, brings home a new wife. Keisha is young, vibrant and not what William’s friends are used to. His first wife, Eleanor was much-loved and Keisha cannot compare. William’s constant demands for Keisha to become something she isn’t pushes her towards Marcie, her only friend. The two have more in common than they know.I’ve not read Pinborough before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. At first, it seemed very glitzy and glam for me. A bit too superficial but then the story picked up and I got into the characters and what was going on. There’s even a little bit of black magic tossed in to spice things up.I found the story to be very entertaining and not as predictable as I expected it to be. I’d read this author again. For more reviews, visit my blog: Book Chatter.

The first time Marcie said Keisha, Keisha, Keisha...all I could think of was Marcia, Marcia, Marcia (think Brady Bunch). Showing my age I know! Three seems to be a significant number in this book, unfortunately, I never really figured out why, don’t believe it was ever brought up in the book. But for some reason, this stuck with me.

An Illicit affair and the high-powered men and their women of Savannah high society...who knew? Marcie is a second wife, marrying Jason after his divorce. Keisha is a young beautiful black ‘girl’ from London, marring much older William after his wife dies of cancer. Lunch with the country club set, add in a trace of voodoo and a mystery and this story is pretty much all over the place. Rich people and rich people problems with characters I didn’t really care for or about. This story was fast-paced enough and totally kept my interest but it was mostly predictable on one level and all over the place on another. As with Behind Her Eyes, there was no WTH ending (at least not in my opinion), more of a high five ending. Good book for a cozy winter day or a beach read! It will keep your attention.

I received an ARC of this book. Opinion is mine alone!

I became a fan of this author with Sarah's debut novel, Behind Her Eyes. So I could not wait to read more books from this author. Cross Her Heart was ok but not as good as the first book. Personally for me this book redeemed. I really enjoyed this book. It got better and better the further I got into the storyline. Just when I thought the story was going to go one way; Sarah throws a few curveballs that had me saying "What just happened". I thought I would hate Keisha or that Marcie would come off too bitter but that was not the case. Both women were likable. They actually did not come from too different worlds. The last third of the story is where things really got interesting. The ending was smart and good. Fans of Sarah Pinborough will not be disappointed by her newest offering, Dead To Her.

I was excited to read Pinborough’s newest book DEAD TO HER. I think her book BEHIND HER EYES was one of the most under-rated books of 2017. I didn’t care for her next book CROSS HER HEART but was eager to try again. Unfortunately, I was not thrilled with this one either. The first half of the book was gripping as the suspense grew. The writing is good, but, in my opinion, the story went on too long with little payback to the reader. The portions dealing voodoo and amulets made no sense at all. Then all the strings got tied up in the last…maybe 75 pages. Overall, very anticlimactic.Thank you to William Morrow for providing me a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I am a huge fan of Sarah Pinborough. She is an exciting writer to me because she is so creative I honestly never know what I am in for when I pick up one of her books. This one was no exception and with a cast of unlikable characters it was fun to sit back and see everything unfold.Marcie Maddox and her husband, Jason, had an affair that resulted in him leaving his first wife and eventually marrying Marcie. They hobnob with other wealthy and elite people in their town of Savannah, Georgia. One of those privileged folks is William Radford IV who has just married a much younger and beautiful woman named Keisha. Marcie is not too happy when she notices Jason and Keisha seem to have an attraction to one another. Marcie better keep her eyes on them because she's worked too hard to maintain her lifestyle and would hate to be kicked to the curb like Jason's first wife. There is way more to the story than what I just wrote in my synopsis but you honestly don't want to know too much going in. What I enjoyed about this book is it is a very slow build up until you get to the big thing that happens in the story. I personally loved that but maybe other readers will find it boring. I feel like this is the type of book that readers can determine fairly early on, like a quarter of the way into it, whether or not this is a book they want to continue reading.Once the action really starts to pick up, everything starts to hit the fan, but in a good way. In terms of predictability there is something that I wondered about early on, and my suspicions turned out to be true. But it's one of those things in which I didn't really have a good theory as to the details so it was still fun to learn why everything played out the way it did. Also there are some I guess what you might call bonus parts to the ending that were pretty unexpected so it's not likely a reader will be able to figure out every single piece of the puzzle ahead of time. This is my favorite of the three books I have read by this author. I just think she is a creative storyteller and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. Definitely recommend reading this one if you have enjoyed her other novels. I also recommend it to the readers who liked Behind Her Eyes but hated the WTF? type ending. This one is a more satisfying type read that is much less controversial.Thank you to HarperCollins Publishers and Netgalley for providing me with an advance digital copy in exchange for an honest review!
