      Unfortunately I couldn’t listen to this book due to the horrible quality that was provided. And it wasn’t my connection as I downloaded the book.

      I’ve tried several times to get to the end of this book and failed . The narration is awful and the story could probably be 1/3 the length and I didn’t even finish it . The idea of their powers is great and I wanted to love it .

      I loved the plot of this book, very interesting magic system. Wasn't too big of the narrators, but I do like that it was an all cast production.

      Very clever. I was able to keep up with all the characters with very little effort. I liked being able to feel there was something not quite right without the feeling that obvious facts were omitted to sustain the mystery.

      I'm not sure right now so I'm going to give it a 3.

      Because while I did fly through this book and enjoyed that the women get heighten abilities from particular animal bones that helps them crier souls into the after life. I just dunno

      At the end of the book.... I had that twilight feeling like I just read all this and nothing really happened. But running and a couple fighting scenes.

      I'm almost 100% sure who Sabine's dad is and if that's the case I'm pretty sure how the next book will go.

      Captivating story, surprising plot twists, voices making you fall for the story more. Bastien sounds a bit like Will Herondale (by Ed westwick in clockwork Prince's audiobook)- you just want to listen to his voice. Just loved it!

      Lower score because: Very heteronormative and heterosexist, which I didn’t appreciate, especially for the “soul mate” tradition.

      Other than that this was really good YA book!

      I gave it a few minutes but simply cannot continue as the male narrator's intonation is annoying me to no end. He raises his pitch awkwardly at the end of almost every sentence and overemphasises words. It's like he never heard of full stops ... Guess I'll just read the book myself.

      The narrator for Bastien was awful. He had this annoying inflection at the end of every sentence. The narrators for the female characters were okay even though there were weird edits or 1-2 sentence inserts where the voice or audio would change in the middle of the paragraph. The story itself was just okay but by the halfway point I was reading to finish and not really because I was invested in the story. I probably won't read the next book in the series.

      The audiobook is very bad. I hated Bastien's voice, also in some text some words, sentences had different voice, and it was very confusing.

      Made it to 19%. This is the first time I'm giving up due to the narrator's voice. I can't stand the male narrator. His whispery voice annoys me. The story is good though so I might try again later or perhaps I will just read the book.

      My hopes for this story didnt quite pan out, though the plot twists did keep taking me by surprise. There was a strange tedium to the relentless action, as if we got lost in the minutia of every thrown punch or blind kick, rather than further developing relationships or exploring the strange laws of their required rituals any deeper. And while I appreciated the velvet sound of the male narrator's voice, his constant lifting inflection at the end of EVERY line (like every single thing is shockingly surprising) is incredibly hard to get used to.

      I really enjoyed the way the author tells the story from the different perspectives of the three main characters. It really helped build a stronger understanding for each character. The storyline was interesting, with clever ties to some familiar mythology, but there were times that things just felt too forced or far-fetched. While the main plot is supposed to be about star-crossed lovers, I found it really difficult to believe the two characters developed such strong feelings for one another, because the external conflicts of the story receive more attention than the actual development or growth of the bond that forms between the main characters. Overall, I would still recommend it for a casual read for anyone looking for mystical fantasy genre with a bit of action and a hint of romance. However...I truly wish they had found a different male reader for the audiobook version. He sounds so dull and brooding, and the lilt of his voice follows a constant up-down-up-down flow like a boat on the ocean, that doesn't go along at all with the flow of the words he is reading. The person reading for Ailesse and Sabine's chapters does a fantastic job of matching her tone to the specific emotions or actions occurring in the book, keeping the listener more deeply connected to the story.

      Story itself was good but narration... Not so much. The male narrator read it like he was racing to the finish line. He'd be a good horse racing commentator. Haha. The female narrators were pretty good, though. I can't say I paid all my attention on the story but I found some bits to be so cute I want to read the next book.

      When you've been groomed for a role that involves offing your intended in order to be worthy of assuming the role of escorting the dead to one of two eternities, you could be forgiven for coming across to others as on the bizarre side. When the boy who you think is your intended/prey, refuses to play nice because he's as interested in killing you as you are of killing him, you have a dandy beginning. Even though the attraction between Ailesse and Bastien is evident early on, that just makes watching it develop even more fun. Toss in his two best friends, her mother who isn't exactly being honest with anyone, especially herself, plus Ailesse's best friend who has her own struggles with her lot in life, and you have quite the cast. Then, there are the hordes of dead needing an escort across the bridge to their good, or bad reward. The moment I finished this, I ordered the sequel and am looking forward to finding out how everything gets sorted out.
