About this audiobook

A Stonewall Honor Book * A Time Magazine Best YA Book of All Time

From Stonewall and Lambda Award–winning author Kacen Callender comes a revelatory YA novel about a transgender teen grappling with identity and self-discovery while falling in love for the first time.

Felix Love has never been in love—and, yes, he’s painfully aware of the irony. He desperately wants to know what it’s like and why it seems so easy for everyone but him to find someone. What’s worse is that, even though he is proud of his identity, Felix also secretly fears that he’s one marginalization too many—Black, queer, and transgender—to ever get his own happily-ever-after.

When an anonymous student begins sending him transphobic messages—after publicly posting Felix’s deadname alongside images of him before he transitioned—Felix comes up with a plan for revenge. What he didn’t count on: his catfish scenario landing him in a quasi–love triangle....

But as he navigates his complicated feelings, Felix begins a journey of questioning and self-discovery that helps redefine his most important relationship: how he feels about himself.

Felix Ever After is an honest and layered story about identity, falling in love, and recognizing the love you deserve.

""Felix is attending an ultracompetitive arts summer program to have a better shot at a full scholarship to Brown when someone posts Felix’s dead name beside photos of him, pre-transition, in the school’s lobby. Felix’s plot to get revenge throws him onto the path of love and self-discovery."" (Publishers Weekly, ""An Anti-Racist Children's and YA Reading List"")

This is one of the best books i've ever read. I litteraly just finished and I am still crying because of what this story as a whole represents to me and to a lot of other LGBTQIA+ people out there. I loved it. So freaking much.

This is a lovely book. Some of the dialogue was a bit cheesy but the more serious bits were just... wonderful. I've never read another book where gender is discussed so deeply and so respectfully (for lack of a better word, I suppose?) There's just so much diversity, it's awesome to know that there's a book for Black and brown queer kids.

The love story parts of this were also so cute, I was definitely squealing through parts of it.

It took me a few chapters to get into this book but I'm glad I kept going. This was a wonderful, realistic, and emotional read. Felix deals with all sorts of things that force him to change perspective, to think and grow and change. He explores himself, slowing gathering the courage to truly express who he is unabashedly. Plot wise I was pleased with how everything tied together. Highly reccommend.

Wonderful story. I can just imagine how priceless this must be to trans teens and young adults. Even I, no longer a young adult, felt all the feels and learnt a lot. What a gem.

Also, stellar narration. I'd had an eBook version for months but had never quite been able to focus enough to read it. I tried this audio version and the narrator's voice immediately drew me in. A completely wonderful experience. I found myself laughing sometimes, smiling at other times, and just totally subsumed in the telling.

This book, omg this book. At first I thought I wouldn't like it and had a hard time getting into it but eventually it became so precious. I was able to connect incredibly well with the characters on and emotional level and got extremely invested in their relationships, I keep wanting to hug them all. Not to mention how well Kacen Callender handles important and difficult topics such as allyship, gender identity and family relationships. I hope this book is soon translated into my mother tongue so my family and friends can read it. If you have the chance to read this gorgeous own voices novel by Kacen Callender, don't pass it up.
Ps:I wish there was a sequel from Ezra's point of view or Declan's and that is my only complain.

This is about a trans-kid, Felix's story of self-discovery and finding love.

Many of us are lucky to have the matching of gender and biological sex. It sometimes makes us numb to the pain of other people who are still confused about their self-identity, gender and sexual orientation. They may keep questioning everyday about "who am I", "do I deserve to be loved", or even "am I real". I am so impressed and touched by Felix's story of finding out himself and his courage in fighting for respect, love and being loved...

There are so many lovely characters in the book. Felix, although he's a bit unconfident, he's so brave and beautiful. And he's so real! He's definitely my favorite. Ezra, always being loyal and caring. His protection and support for Felix make my heart warm. Declan is smart and nice, and so considerate. I like him very much! Leah, a kind-hearted friend who is always willing to fight for Felix, she's very adorable too.

Besides characters, the story itself is multi-layered. The suspicious transphobic bullying, the relationship between parents and children, and the mysterious love triangle, all of these are very riveting.

I usually don't like love triangle plots, but I have to say the love among Felix, Ezra and Declan is very beautiful. To me, Felix and Declan are soulmates, they fall in love through a heart-to-heart connection. But Felix and Ezra are forever, they are so connected that they don't even realize the bonding. It sounds ridiculous, but it is true, sometimes, when you are overwhelmed by someone you love and get so used to their existence, you may forget or even not realize your love for them. Happiness can make you numb. "One can love more than one person", said Tolly, Declan's granddad, and I totally agree.

And the audiobook, it's awesome! The voice and performance of Logan Rozos exactly match with my imagination of Felix!

    Beautiful.
Just Beautiful I would say. Every teen goes through a lot of questions and a tussle to be accepted by their parents for what they are. But, unfortunately the struggle is more awful when it comes to trans kids. What ruthlessness and awkwardness they had to face for being them. And over the above they doesn’t need anything but an acceptance, a validation. Brilliantly portrait by Felix Love this book is a brilliant move to tell the kids that know that you are not out there to be validated or accepted by others. It is you who matters, when you matter to yourself the rest follows. I mean the herd.
And why the kids, but the Adults also spend the whole life to be validated and accepted. Learn from Felix and his mistakes and his braveness that “if you are worth to yourself nothing matters. When you accept yourself you will find the universal truth that - You were, You are and You will be always special.” Be special to yourself and let the world follow.

I think everyone should read this book!

Felix is a trans Black youth. His experiences are not mine. His pain is not mine. But I felt them. I saw them. And I learned so much from them.

You see, Kacen has this profound ability to emphasize the reality of Black trans experiences laced in a story that even I, a cis white female, can relate to. And I know that may seen far-reaching, but it’s not.

The topics discussed within these pages are real and raw and necessary. From religion vs. queerness to parental abandonment to shame to morality to feeling seen to feeling the right to be one’s true self. There’s a part of Felix’s story that we can all relate to.

And I can’t tell you how impactful that was to experience that. The magnitude of empathically saying “that’s a part of my story too”.

And because Kacen built that bond between you (the reader) and Felix, your heart encapsulates him. It’s this love, this trust, that Felix puts in our hands to care for him as much as he’s asking to be cared for.

And then you realize you are there, hold his hand, walking beside him. And that that’s the reality we should be living in.

This book is about seeing love as love. And I can’t express how much it held my heart.

Please read it. Please share it. Please talk about it

    Just ok.
The vulgar language ruined it for me. I use to listen or read YA to escape from that type language. Now each year it gets worse.

One of my new favorites. As a gay trans man(ish) I’ve never felt so seen & have never resonated more with a story. This let me live the gay trans high school experience I never got.
Left me bawling with joy, had me on the edge of my seat, laughing, and falling in love right alongside the protagonist.
The voice actor was also wonderful & did really thoughtful work. Thanks for this.

The narrator was great, I really enjoyed listening to the audio. The book itself was a great YA romance I wish I had had the opportunity to read when I was in my teens. Educational, heartbreaking & heartwarming. I'm definitely interested in some other books by Callender. I would also love to see illustrations of the art featuring in the book, it was very vivid to me while listening / reading it.
