Descriere

Fredrik Backman's blockbuster bestselling debut novel is now available in a brand-new recording narrated by Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons!

In this "charming debut" (People) from one of Sweden's most successful authors, a grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell." But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.

A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, Fredrik Backman's novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. "If there was an award for 'Most Charming Book of the Year,' this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down" (Booklist, starred review).

I LOVED this! Fredrik Backman is my new favorite author. I feel like I've just stumbled upon a pot of gold.

This is absolutely not a genre I would typically read. Historical fiction, sci-fi, dystopian - are my usuals, but this is one that I will recommend far and wide. I feel it deserves to become a classic being read by future generations. I laughed, I cried, I recognized pieces of those I love deepest in each of the colorful characters. This is one book that will be engrained in the depths of my soul until my own memory fades....and then, maybe I’ll just be able to read it and fall in love Ove all over again!

This is a story about how you should never judge a book by its cover, and people who seem soulless can have a huge heart!

It's written very well and it allows you to explore suicide with an understanding and sympathetic lense. Very wonderful to stimulate the listener while doing mundane tasks!

This author has a true gift with words. I found myself listening to sections over and over to soak up his descriptions. I cried many tears while listening—mostly from laughter, but a few from sadness, too. Truly a beautiful story. I highly recommend it!

Such a great audiobook. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I highly recommend it.

This lovely story of a seemingly simple life is beautifully woven from flashbacks and the present moment. Mr. Simmons' narration combines perfectly the senses of flabbergasted frustration and innocent irony. I haven't laughed so hard in months, literally almost falling off my chair, In recognition of all those instances in which we consider the other person a thickheaded twit as the result of our own narrowmindedness. I didn't give it five stars because I was surprised and offended at the use of poor grammar ("me and so and so..."instead of "so and so and I...") to give the story some sort of unnecessary earthiness. All I can say is that Swedes would never speak like that.

I absolutely loved this book. It was touching, well written and well read. The story flowed very nicely, the dialogue was engaging, and it had just the right amount of humor for such profound theme.

I actually thought this could have taken place in the United States.

There are laughs in every chapter.
I’m not sure the book could be any better.

Great narrator. I enjoyed my long walks by listening to this book.

Really enjoyed the book. It shows how people are hide their true self.
Can,t tell the book by the cover. The story is about a caring man even if he didn’t want to admit it.

I will never forget Ove. Ever! This is a book of evergreen characters, who are especially timely for those (like me) looking for solid ground.
