Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people…

In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal’s office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash.

Separated by distance—and Papi’s secrets—the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered.

And then, when it seems like they’ve lost everything of their father, they learn of each other.

Clap When You Land is absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking, as you can expect from a novel about two sisters who don't know of each other, but discover their father's secret when he dies in a plane crash. Not only is Acevedo's writing gorgeous and compelling, but the portrayal of grief, family, self-discovery, forgiveness, sisterhood and pride in your culture and heritage enraptures you completely.

I’ve never read such an accurate representation of the loss of a loved one. The guilt, the rage, the emptiness, the little reminders of the person are all explored in this book. It weirdly gave me an overwhelming sense of peace.

Stunning book and performance by the narrators. Content warnings for sexual assault, stalking, attempted rape on-page.

Another excellent story. I am not Dominican or even Latina but as a black female who grew up and have lived most of my life on a small island this story is relatable in so many ways. There are also many Dominicans living in my country and while sadly many people think the women are preditors, I wonder how many of their lives were crafted by victimisation. I didn't know about this crash but your story did well to bring awareness. I hope it will also encourage the many who bury themeselves with their grief to find ways to heal.

Great book about 2 sisters who only learn of one another after their father's plane crashed. It's a story about love and family and finding who you are and who you're meant to be.

I like With the Fire On High More

Perhaps the imagery and food details in WFOH appeals to me more. I tried to love this as much as I did the other book, but it was difilficult for me to not get confused considering I'm reading this as an audio book. It may probably be a totally different experience on page, but as an audio book, the back and forth confused me a bit, preventing my otherwise enjoyable immersive experience with an Acevedo book. I like how the book tackled grief and "family secrets," though, without making it dramatic, cheesy, or dragging. But it was not as much as an easy read as my fave WFOH.

I liked the idea of a novel in verses, but because of the constant switching between characters i had to make a mental note to remember which girl was in Dominican Republic and which was in New York.
I read reviews that said they couldn't differentiate the girls because their voices sounded similar - they did, but the author, who was narrating Yahaira, had a different take on the story.
My problem was not properly identifying the girls with their names and stories. I even had to stop listening at one time and read positive reviews (as not to spoil my own review) to understand the story better.
I think that if i were to read the hard copy i wouldn't have finished it because of the verses, but i think the audiobook was spot on!

That was brilliant! I’ve only read two books by Elizabeth Acevedo so far in my life, counting with this one. And I’m so sure that she’s one of my favorite authors, as I’m sure she’s a genius. Her writing transmits so much feeling it’s impossible to stay neutral. You laugh and you cry with these characters because you feel with them, not for them. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

Camino is a seventeen-year-old girl living in the Dominican Republic with her aunt. Yahaira is a seventeen-year-old girl living in New York City with her mother. Their lives are initially separate but become tied together by a family secret and a tragedy. It is based on the (real) crash of American Airlines Flight 587. It is a novel of sudden loss, grief, mourning, and ultimately, acceptance. The author’s choice to tell this story via poetry helps mitigate some of the more difficult and disturbing subject matter. It is written in a young adult style. It is a creative journey through the stages of grief. I cannot say I “enjoyed” it, but I appreciated the idea and the execution. The ending is particularly well-done and, for me, the best part of the book.

4.5 stars! The message in this book is so important, and I absolutely loved hearing both perspectives. This YA book will be a connection for some students that were born in another country and/or have family in another country. The way the girls navigated through various cultures was well done. I loved how the book was written in verse and so poetically.

    ?My Thoughts?

I have been reading mostly arc books this year, but I am just a couple books away from meeting my yearly goal, so I decided to treat myself and read a non-arc book. This book has been on my radar pretty much since I read With The Fire on High, which I absolutely loved. This was even more amazing. I love how drawn into this book I was. Elizabeth Acevedo writes in such a way that it completely draws you in, allowing you to feel all of the emotions the characters are feeling. This book was one of the most powerful books I’ve read in a long time and I honestly don’t think I can even begin to do it justice. I’ve read books before where the main character is dealing with grief, but to see it from the viewpoint of two different characters having had a different upbringing as well as living in different countries and cultures, not even knowing about one another, was very interesting to say the least. I think Elizabeth Acevedo is a very talented writer and I’m looking forward to reading more of her work. This is a definite must read in my opinion. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

?this book has a few trigger warnings, including death of a loved one, molestation, and trafficking
