About this audiobook

On the surface, the galaxy seems peaceful. Humankind prospers from the Capital World to the far reaches of The Corridor. But to those who can see the signs, it's clear something is wrong. Long, dark fingers are pulling strings inside the military, making clandestine deals with enemy states, and fulfilling some dark design. Calvin is an intelligence agent working for the Imperial government. He's young, his methods are unorthodox, but he gets results. So when a former military hero steals a warship and goes rogue--threatening to start a war, Calvin is sent to eliminate him. But as he chases his prey across the stars, he realizes they are both pawns in a shadowy chess game that shakes kingdoms, divides empires, and threatens civilization everywhere. And if he is to uncover the mystery and expose the conspiracy he must confront--and embrace--the darkest elements of the galaxy and throw himself, his career, and everyone he loves into the line of fire.

Disturbingly sexist view of women officers -- outdated and creepy. "He hated beautiful, arrogant women, who he assumed had everything handed to them on a silver platter." (Umm, his superior officer btw.)

Good narrator, good story and premise. But a big problem is that I was never sold on the main character... In one scene he (the captain) is encouraging people to speak freely and saying he values everyone's opinion, and in other scenes he is scolding people for questioning his orders. Later he invites his x o onto the bridge, saying "your place is by my side" and then completely ignores her the one time she says something. He's really smart sometimes and a complete idiot sometimes. He makes one really terrible decision and does not properly acknowledge any guilt or responsibility for what happens as a result. These seem more like inadvertent inconsistencies and oversights rather than intentional contradictions. As a result I don't quite understand or like the main character. One more positive note is the story is actually quite funny sometimes and will make you laugh.

Good story. Narrator hasn't range that others have, but not too bad either.

As a former sailor I love the use of naval command structure. This is an action mystery set in futuristic naval space. Very good look forward to next books in the series!

The overall story was interesting but I felt the second act was more or less unnecessary.

Plot heavy, with good action and descriptions. The start to finish is a constant step progression with resolution of one issue but only revealing tiny amounts of the big picture that is partially revealed at the end. Very well written
