I quite enjoyed the first book in this series, but this one was a miss for me. The heroine was kind of dim witted, and she's also in the inferior position of being the robber to his cop, so it just didn't feel like they were equal adversaries. And for most of the book he's either trying to catch her or is considering turning her in, *both of which would result in her hanging!* so even their personal relations are ridiculously unbalanced. [Plus, as a side note, trying to seduce someone who you plan on delivering to the gallows is super skeezy! You're either there as an officer of the law (and you keep your hands to yourself), or you're there as just a man (and you set aside any plans to apprehend them). Not both]. She and her loved ones also largely treated her interactions with him like a game, but genuinely her life hung in the balance! Continually throwing caution to the wind in order to tease or flirt or something is just reckless and foolish when it could lead to your death. It felt kind of like it was maybe trying to be a lighthearted caper, but the stakes were too high for it to be that carefree. Also the villain, and their backstories, were generally poorly developed. It's not horribly written otherwise, but too many things pulled me out of the story or irritated me that I ended up just looking forward to it being over already.

Full review appeared at Reader's Edyn on June 28, 2020Emmy is a thief, though not by choice and not without morals – if the two can be reconciled. Thrust into the profession by her late father, she believed her days of burglary far behind her following his passing. Unfortunately, an evil nemesis by the name of Danton has forced her back into the dangerous lifestyle. If she refuses to comply, she and her family will be implicated in the past thefts and sent to the gallows for sure. Reluctantly she dons the disguise she had thought retired for good. But a wrench appears in her plans when Alex Harland heads up the Bow Street investigations surrounding the missing jewels. The one man who fires her blood; whom she stole a kiss from those many years ago; who she always wanted but could never have. She really has no choice but to find some bit of fun within this predicament by taunting Alex at every turn. But he’s closer than she suspects and suddenly her pursuer becomes her savior. However, she has still committed crimes and with both of them sitting on opposite sides of the law, their endgame remains unclear.Alex is caught up in every aspect of his investigation. The thrill of the chase and knowing he always gets his man is a rush like no other. But when a sensory slap from the past and deep longing for the one who got away suddenly intertwines with his missing jewel case, he is pummeled with conflicting emotions. And even then, the excitement proves too great to resist. Hot on Emmy’s trail and certain she is the one he is after, he pursues her relentlessly, trying to get a leg up on her because the minx always proves one step ahead of him. Not to be outdone, he makes his move. But the details of her actions are not what he expected and before he knows it, Alex is struggling with his ingrained honor-bound reputation and desperately wanting to protect Emmy. But how to protect her after the threat is neutralized will mean diving deep within himself and realizing just how profound his feelings for Emmy have become. Or maybe they always were. But convincing Emmy of his plan to save her and her family once and for all will require laying every single confession on the table – including the impact from that fateful night several years before.Eeeeeep! This book is fricking fantastic! I have not read anything from Ms. Bateman before, so I also have not read the first book in this series. And glory be, I didn’t need to either. There were slight references to the previous book, but absolutely nothing that interfered with my ability to completely immerse myself within this book. Sure, the concept is a bit far-fetched. A lady of society moonlighting as a thief. Unlikely. But it was so much fun and I absolutely adored the characters. So ultimately, I didn’t give a fig whether it was a likely scenario or not. I adored the introduction and melted during the final chapter. The characters were phenomenal and I enjoyed getting to know every single one of them, except for Danton, of course – the dirty rat! Benedict was not a very big part of the story, so I didn’t get to know him very well. However, his brief interaction was on the marl and displayed the great friendship between the men. And Seb, well, he was immediately likable and I look forward to his book. Rounding out this fun cast, was the Danver family and their saucy maid, Sally. She happens to be quite skilled in several areas that help Emmy and Luc facilitate their thefts. It’s all quite exciting. Luc is the ever protective brother, but also key to helping Emmy complete her “jobs”. Injured in battle, he is somewhat limited in his abilities but is sure to help in whatever capacity he can. And then there is the unforgettable Camille. Grandmother to both Luc and Emmy and as fantastic as they come, Camille knows her own mind and while some views are rather unconventional, she isn’t afraid to let her thoughts be heard. She’s also sharp as a tack and tends to get straight to the heart of things rather than beating around the bush.I also adored Emmy’s penchant for learning words in other languages that have no direct translation in English. Emmy already had quite a few entertaining words to share and, of course, Alex added a few of his own to her unique, but brilliant collection. Overall, this was a super fun read, packed full of humor, and just a bit of suspense. I loved the continual game of advance and retreat that Alex and Emmy played throughout the story, each wanting to gain the upper hand, yet scheming to keep their cards close to their chests. They couldn’t give up every secret initially, and so they would lunge and parry with one another, trying to outdo the other. Being on opposite sides of the law also helped to add a bit of flair to the plot. When everything seems insurmountable, love still prevails. And with Emmy continually leading Alex on a merry chase, she clearly emerges as the singular woman who would be able to hold his interest even after he captures her. Neither Alex nor Emmy would be content to live a rather bland life, but together the thrill they inspire in one another makes for a rather tantalizing future. Despite Emmy being a thief and Alex a man of the law, they both stole one another’s hearts long before they acknowledged it. Ms. Bateman is a fantastic author and I cannot wait to experience her work again! I am quite looking forward to Seb and the woman who will capture his cynical heart. Within the space of these tantalizing pages, Ms. Bateman has instantly become a must-read author that I plan to enjoy as many times as possible. Lovers of historical romance are sure to fall in love with this author and these memorable characters instantly.Kindle version provided by NetGalley/St.Martin’s Press in exchange for an honest review.

Jewel thief for a higher cause!Bow Street Inquiry agent Alex Harland, the Earl of Melton, is struck by a perfume he can never forget. I must admit this idea of a perfume being the secret to the identity of a thief is not new. This of course I s a huge flaw in an otherwise successful thief's armour. (And really even though this is the hook for unravelling the mystery from Alex's viewpoint, I just felt Emmy's determination to wear a distinctive perfume just doesn't sit well over against the clever woman she is supposed to be. I guess I wasn't buying the premise.)'Emmeline Louise d’Anvers, the daughter of Europe’s most elusive jewel thief', aka as Nightjar, herself a notorious jewel thief is fulfilling a family commitment 'to recover the French crown jewels and store them until the Bourbon monarchy can claim them. The stolen jewels that have all been broken from the stolen crown one by one and refashioned into other stunning settings. Can one be accused of stealing that in itself is already stolen? All the jewels have been re-taken, excepting three—a white diamond, a blue diamond, and a ruby.Alex, a consummate rake was enticed, maddened and besotted with Emmy. He knew she was the jewel thief but catching her presented him with a gigantic headache.Alex surprised himself by the hunger he felt for her. An emotion returned. (Despite those kisses that left them both senseless, I wasn't feeling the lurve. Still I loved the idea of senselessness!) Emmy knew that Alex was aware of her escapades. She wants to stop. Unfortunately it becomes apparent that the son of an acquaintance of her father's is now blackmailing the Danvers family to continue the thefts and they can see no way out without being exposed. The future shows no promise. Danger and exposure surrounds the family. There appears there is no alternative but to follow the blackmailer's demands. The last of the stones must be retrieved. Alex and Emmy's relationship and the d’Anvers family seem doomed!A lightweight romantic regency jewel thief mystery that brings a slightly different take to that genre.A St. Martin's Press ARC via NetGalley

Series: Bow Street Bachelors #2Publication Date: 6/30/20Number of Pages: 336Welcome to the second exciting and steamy installment of the Bow Street Bachelors. You are going to love this excellently-written, well-plotted, and well-delivered story which takes place just two months after the first book, This Earl of Mine. I will admit, I had a love-hate relationship with Alex – quite often I didn’t care for how he treated Emmy, even though I could understand his turmoil. As for Emmy, well, I just loved her and her family and was happy to see her find her HEA.Emmy Danvers (Emmeline Louise d’Anvers), the daughter of Europe’s most elusive jewel thief, has only broken one of her father’s rules – and it will bring her great pleasure and great pain. That rule? Only touch what you’re going to steal. She broke it four years ago when she kissed Alexander Harland at a masked ball. He had no idea who she was, but she knew exactly who he was because she’d admired him from afar for a very long time. She has never forgotten that kiss nor the man who bestowed it – no other man has ever felt ‘right’. She knows he’ll never notice her among the crowds – and she’s grateful for that – because they are on very different sides of the law. After her father’s death, Emmy has assumed his role as the Nightjar and is now being sought by Bow Street after stealing a gem owned by the Prince Regent. Two months ago, after he and his two best friends, Seb and Benedict, had foiled an attempt to rescue Bonaparte from exile on St. Helena, they were all granted titles. He is now Alexander Harland, Earl of Melton. But, more importantly to him, he is a partner in the Tricorn Club and he aids Bow Street with sensitive cases. He’s just been handed one such sensitive case – a thief known as the Nightjar has stolen a diamond from Rundell Bridge and Rundell. The owner of that diamond is none other than the Prince Regent and he is demanding they find his diamond and prosecute the scurrilous thief. Alex likes nothing better than a good challenge and the Nightjar will be a challenge.Alex doesn’t ever see himself marrying, but he can’t forget that kiss four years ago. A woman kissed him at a masquerade ball and he never learned her name – but he’s never forgotten her. He remembers every detail -he can picture it in his mind – and her scent – OH! He remembers that as well. When he visits the scene of the crime at Rundell Bridge and Rundell, he catches a whiff of that scent. He hasn’t smelled exactly that scent in four years, but he is positive it is the same. Yet, there are so many people on the street he can’t find the source ** He should be prepared, that scent is going to drive him insane for the next few weeks. **I loved the mystery and the chase. Emmy and Alex are both very smart strategic thinkers and each takes delight in outwitting the other. Will she finish her father’s task and escape being arrested? Will he catch her and send her to the gallows? It seems it must be one way or the other with no in-between. You’ll just have to read the story to find out all of the wonderful details. Be prepared – there isn’t a dull minute in there anywhere.I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a sweet, funny, utterly charming story. I was captivated beginning to end. Alex and Emmy are so much fun. Cat and mouse, wordplay and innuendo, sexy, steamy interludes. It is just delightful to go along on the ride to see who figures out what, who catches who, who realizes first they are in love and does something about it. Throughout the book Emmy loves to discover foreign words that have no direct translation in English. Author Kate Bateman says in the Author’s notes that the Japanese phrase Koi No Yokan is perfect for Emmy and Alex: “The sense of inevitability upon first meeting a person that the two of you are going to fall in love.“ She is exactly right. We all know it. When Alex and Emmy met in the past they felt it, but timing can be everything and the timing wasn’t right. And when they meet again, not only does the timing not seem ideal, they are on opposite sides of the law and family is at stake. So how is that ever going to work out? Take the journey with them, see if they can work it out, if they are able to accept the inevitable despite the barriers and bumps and those who would stop at nothing to see them harmed. It’s a trip well worth taking! Read To Catch an Earl. I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I did. Thanks to St. Martin’s Press for providing an advance copy of To Catch an Earl via NetGalley for my reading pleasure and honest review. All opinions are my own. I highly recommend it.
