About this audiobook

An alien artifact turns a young girl into Death's adopted daughter in Remote Control, a thrilling sci-fi tale of community and female empowerment from Nebula and Hugo Award-winner Nnedi Okorafor

Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award

"Narrator Adjoa Andoh captivates listeners with a stunning new sci-fi novella set in a near-future Ghana. Andoh is perfectly in tune with Okorafor's compelling story, smoothly switching between her British accent as the narrator and the intonations of the vibrant characters she brings to life." -- AudioFile Magazine

“She’s the adopted daughter of the Angel of Death. Beware of her. Mind her. Death guards her like one of its own.”

The day Fatima forgot her name, Death paid a visit. From hereon in she would be known as Sankofa—a name that meant nothing to anyone but her, the only tie to her family and her past.

Her touch is death, and with a glance a town can fall. And she walks—alone, except for her fox companion—searching for the object that came from the sky and gave itself to her when the meteors fell and when she was yet unchanged; searching for answers.

But is there a greater purpose for Sankofa, now that Death is her constant companion?

Death’s daughter…

The newest science fiction thriller from Nnedi Okorafor (“Who Fears Death,” “Binti,” “Akata Witch”) weaves together a tale of female empowerment and the importance of community, set against a futuristic backdrop that incorporates Okorafor’s Nigerian heritage. In it, a young girl named Fatima’s life is forever changed after an alien artifact transforms her into Death’s adopted daughter. With a new name — Sankofa — she walks the earth, with no one but a fox as a companion, in search of answers. What will be the future of Death’s daughter?

Amazing performance. This whole novella reminded me so much of Binti.

What could be more chilling than to understand at last, that the Beloved is your deadliest enemy?

The story was wonderful, but the narration of the story was phenomenal!

Like most people investigating this book I am a Binti series fan. Akata witch was a pale substitute although I liked it just fine it didn't have the same feel for me. This novella, however, hit the spot and then some. I especially like that the character did not spend as much time being vulnerable as the heroin in Binti did.

This story is lonely but full. She has a drive to determine her connection to the artifact seed but along the way she finds her strength and learns to control her powers, grief, guilt and emotional responses. She learns many valuable lessons and she teaches several men deserved lessons too.

The ending felt final but I could see where a sequel would be possible (possibly a fight between her and the corporate pharmaceutical company that mysteriously follows her through the entire story). I wouldn't mind another journey like this one.

I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Regardless of how hard I tried I couldn’t get past the Wakanada accent, the narrator kept switching to.
Would recommend to a YA reader though.

It was confusion. A mix between a very rural Ghana and far fetched futuristic technology. I never thought these two very opposite topics could be merged so beautifully.
    It was good entertainment

Vivid, well narrated. And so very sad. A bit unexpected, which was good.

Nnedi never disappoints. Remarkable. Stud-able. Trauma and healing in a gentle magical girls world. A full circle journey.

Remote Control may not be genre-busting in the scifi department but the protagonist and story immediately came to stunning life as soon as it began.
