About this audiobook

“Sneaks up on you with its insight and poignancy.” —Entertainment Weekly

From New York Times bestselling author Mary H.K. Choi comes a funny and emotional story about two estranged sisters and how far they’ll go to save one of their lives—even if it means swapping identities.

Jayne and June Baek are nothing alike. June’s three years older, a classic first-born, know-it-all narc with a problematic finance job and an equally soulless apartment (according to Jayne). Jayne is an emotionally stunted, self-obsessed basket case who lives in squalor, has egregious taste in men, and needs to get to class and stop wasting Mom and Dad’s money (if you ask June). Once thick as thieves, these sisters who moved from Seoul to San Antonio to New York together now don’t want anything to do with each other.

That is, until June gets cancer. And Jayne becomes the only one who can help her.

Flung together by circumstance, housing woes, and family secrets, will the sisters learn more about each other than they’re willing to confront? And what if while helping June, Jayne has to confront the fact that maybe she’s sick, too?

Editor's Note

Tender sibling story…

Mary H.K. Choi stole our hearts with #OwnVoices YA romances “Emergency Contact” and “Permanent Record.” In “Yolk,” Choi writes about two sisters, Jayne and June Baek, who were once close but have drifted apart since high school. Older sister June is a perfect workaholic; Jayne seeks approval in all the wrong places. They’ve both made their way from Korea to Texas to New York, but still hardly see each other — until June gets horribly sick. Choi really takes her tender storytelling to the next level here, and “Yolk” might just be the best of her amazing book covers yet.

I loved that the main relationship of the story was that of the two sisters and not the romantic ones.

Book captured characters that felt real, not perfect people or just one dimensional, they felt like people that exist.

A delightful journey through a heavy, profound story. I could imagine me talking to my brother in so many dialogues…

I didn’t have the highest expectations when choosing this book beyond that it sounded interesting but within the first few minutes I was hooked. The writing is beautiful, and the character development is lovely.

Amazing book. It shows the intricacies of family dynamics, filial piety, the great and not-so-great parts of a culture, and the ways in which we cope while dealing with all of the aforementioned. This was my first audiobook so it took me a while to get used to the way it was read, not a fan of some of the different character’s voices. Overall, a great listen. I will be purchasing a physical copy of the book.

It creeps up on you the unknown day of your first period. Cramps and a violent pains that pronounce this will be your new life. You’re now a woman but refuse except it until you can longer deny it. I couldn’t put my phone down I was reprimanded at work for listening to my phone during work meetings as my phone’s Bluetooth connected to my work’s PA system, so embarrassing….

I finished it in three days wanting it to never finish….

The book I wished would never end. A stunning story of growing up, sisterhood, family, love, and friendship. Delicately written, and softly told.

First kinda slow then it was like running. It rigged at my heart strings and made me choke a little. The details weren’t captivating but the story became so.
