“HONEY GIRL is an emotional, heartfelt, charming debut, and I loved every moment of it.”
— Jasmine Guillory, New York Times bestselling author of The Proposal

When becoming an adult means learning to love yourself first.

With her newly completed PhD in astronomy in hand, twenty-eight-year-old Grace Porter goes on a girls’ trip to Vegas to celebrate. She’s a straight A, work-through-the-summer certified high achiever. She is not the kind of person who goes to Vegas and gets drunkenly married to a woman whose name she doesn’t know…until she does exactly that.

This one moment of departure from her stern ex-military father’s plans for her life has Grace wondering why she doesn’t feel more fulfilled from completing her degree. Staggering under the weight of her parent’s expectations, a struggling job market and feelings of burnout, Grace flees her home in Portland for a summer in New York with the wife she barely knows.

In New York, she’s able to ignore all the constant questions about her future plans and falls hard for her creative and beautiful wife, Yuki Yamamoto. But when reality comes crashing in, Grace must face what she’s been running from all along—the fears that make us human, the family scars that need to heal and the longing for connection, especially when navigating the messiness of adulthood.

Lovely adult contemporary featuring a young woman who achieved her goal to get PhD in astronomy but now is tired and losing control. Grace Porter is a wonderful, sympathetic protagonist. She is Black biracial lesbian woman the way she navigates herself in the world is in no small part showed by her identities. Honey Girl is a novel about letting go and taking care of yourself and that the changes aren’t necessarily bad and that easy isn’t necessarily a sign of less or weak.
Grace has amazing friend group and family. Their interactions ring so true, there is so much love but also conflict and unresolved emotions bottling up and spilling out.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

NOTE : writing this review was a STRUGGLE, I blame that on the new mom brain ok ?

I thought this would be a cute, binge worthy romance and I'm actually kinda glad it wasn't ONLY that. So of course, there is a TON of queerness in this book, mixed in with society's expectations of millennials, as well as mental health (and not just of one character, but quite a few of them!)

The main character has just finished her PhD in astronomy (btw, how cool and unique is THAT career path?) However, being a queer black woman, she has difficulties finding a job even if she is extremely well qualified. She struggles with her father and society's expectations of what comes next after finishing her education (SUCH a relatable feeling). Turns out she needed to take a step back and focus on herself and the things that truly matter. Like, love. There is so much love in this book, it's TANGIBLE. On a romantic level for sure, but also with family and close friends. 3.5⭐

Amazing!! I love the writing style I’ve never read anything written like this before. An interesting story about family dynamics, friendship, love, and finding out who you are outside of the expectations of those around you.

This book was SLOW the 1st 70ish pages. But I understand why the author had to write “the backstory” so we could appreciate the growth and the breakthrough moment. I think all of us go through a moment of “what now?” and it was refreshing to read about a character who is working through her mental health challenges while trying to navigate life.

I definitely will be reading more from this author. And the cover?? One of my absolute favorites!

Such a beautiful book. I would recommend to anyone who’s a perfectionist. I felt sad for Grace, wanting every part of your life to be so prefect.

This was a bit odd for me.
I loved the story and the complexity of the characters, but the writing was way too poetic for my liking. I almost never read poetic stuff so it felt weird and uncomfortable at times, but it is a beautiful story nonetheless. Not sure I would read it again though.

Beautifully relatable. There’s so much love written in this novel, it’s easy to feel part of it. I’d recommend to any millennial struggling to find their path and passion for life.

the writing was too flowery. i enjoyed the characters but the way they spoke to each other wasn’t always believable. the narrator ruined this story for me, between the lisp and speaking with extended pauses between each word. there isn’t anything wrong with having a lisp, but it ruined the listening experience for me.
the plot of this book was all over the place. i hated the getting married on a whim side of it but really enjoyed grace finding herself and taking the time to heal her trauma. when i started this book i didn’t realize it was going to be as cheesy of a romance novel as it ended up being.

Partly cute romance, partly a Black lesbian dealing with anxiety and overwhelming pressure, and learning to love herself again.
