About this audiobook

Known for being a handsome, devil-may-care rake, the Duke of Carlisle has never given much thought to the daughter of an earl he's been betrothed to since childhood. But as their impending marriage draws nearer and he realizes it will mean the end of his pleasure-seeking days, he decides to join his unseen bride's family for the holidays disguised as a gentleman farmer to find out what she's really like.

One person sees through his disguise immediately: his betrothed's lovely paid companion, Miss Elinor Stafford. Reluctantly convinced that Carlisle's ruse is a harmless prank, Elinor consents to keep the duke's secret and help him learn whether his bride-to-be is someone he can happily spend the rest of his life with. Two problems: as it turns out, she isn't, and Elinor is.
They both know their union would never be allowed — but Christmas is a time for miracles, and sometimes, if none are forthcoming, you just have to make your own.

A predictable story with little depth. Was fine for a light read.

A book that has made me laugh, get misty eye and cheer for the HEA ... and the celebration of the true 12 days of Christmas what more can you ask for!!!!

I actually enjoyed this, though naturally, you shouldn't expect a literary masterpiece. It's one of those comforting, short and sweet stories to listen to. I will, however, have to agree with most other reviews in saying that the narrator's accent is all over the place (and obviously fake) as is her intonation; it's a tad frustrating and throws you off at times.

One of the best novels I have listened lately! It was short, funny but filled with emotions. I loved the main heroes, their love and noble behaviour. It did remind me of Pride and Prejudice which is my favourite.

Marvelously done. Hats off to the author! Pithy, fun, and delightful story without feeling overly shallow. Made me laugh out loud which is my standard for a satisfying story.

Mostly pretty predictable and a bit unrealistic, but I don't mind that in this type of book. I enjoyed it.

Amateurish writing, which doesn’t surprise me after hearing that the author is not experienced. Sweet and satisfying plot. The American narrator’s English accent was atrocious, and therefore very distracting. She also pronounced the noun “affect” with the verb pronunciation ( a disservice to the author) and constantly breathed mid-sentence and even mid-phrase. It sounded like she was unfamiliar with the text and/or is not an experienced voice performer.

Cute plot, if entirely predictable. Amateurish writing. The narrator is an American attempting an English accent and failing miserably. Her accent is all over the place, sometimes more, sometimes less, and always fake-sounding. She breathes mid-sentence and mid-phrase all over the place. Sounds like she's sight-reading. The recording production is also bad. Popped P's, and chapters at different volumes.

Ahm what can I say about this, I can't say that it was the bestest novel that I've heard, since I haven't listened/read enough to compare to. However, I undoubtedly enjoyed it.

I didn’t feel like I missed anything even though it was rather short. It did make it a little harder to feel a connection with the characters due to its length. I was not a big fan of the narrator, however, which made it less enjoyable.

I liked the story. Didn't feel like I missed out on anything even though it was only around 3 hours of listening.

Very enjoyable! Predictable, but enjoyable. I would definitely listen to it again.

I enjoyed listening to the story, but there were two major problems.
The narrator’s accent was dreadful, she was using a fake English accent but continued to miss pronounce certain words. Duke ( jook) became Dook. Because of amount of times this was repeated it really irritated me. I would rather she had read it in her own natural accent.
The other problem is at times it felt more like a parody rather than a historical romantic comedy. Increasingly towards the slightly rushed end.
If you are looking for a Georgette Heyer style Regency Romance, with realistic characters then you will be disappointed, there is little historical accuracy, but as a quick Amusing tale it’s fine.

I couldn’t get through very many chapters of this due to the voice of the narrator. I couldn’t even try to tolerate it even for the sake of the story.

I don't get into historical romances much, but this I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm not sure I'm so good with the ending however, since regardless, money and status made everything work out. It sort of erased the whole equality thing.
