A NEW YORK TIMES "TEN BEST BOOKS OF 2022"
An Oprah’s Book Club Selection • An Instant New York Times Bestseller • An Instant Wall Street Journal Bestseller • A #1 Washington Post Bestseller
"Demon is a voice for the ages—akin to Huck Finn or Holden Caulfield—only even more resilient.” —Beth Macy, author of Dopesick
"May be the best novel of 2022. . . . Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, this is the story of an irrepressible boy nobody wants, but readers will love.” (Ron Charles, Washington Post)
From the acclaimed author of The Poisonwood Bible and The Bean Trees, a brilliant novel that enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young hero’s unforgettable journey to maturity
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.
Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind.

- Evaluare: 3 din 5 stele3/5The main character is a sympathetic one that essentially is an orphan like Charles Dickens’s characters, but this story modernizes the struggle through the eyes of an impoverished boy who gets caught up in drugs and depressing relationships. Too many characters with offbeat names (Maggot, Uhaul, etc) makes it feel contrived despite the efforts to present realism.
Love Kingsolver’s Poisonwood, but this is her second miss that I’ve read…she’s 50/50 in my book. Good stats for baseball; bad for a quarterback. - Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Great characters and of course it was good because it’s Barbara Kingsolver.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Great characters and language. It was like a Dickens novel with lots of adversity and a redemptive ending. It had a moral voice without scolding the reader (unless, of course you sell opiates to teenagers, then you will be uncomfortable, as well you should be!)
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5I would say that this book was not great, however I did enjoy it.it was difficult for me to get into it, but I persisted until I was hooked. The characters were well developed. A little depressing; it is well written & that would make this a great book.
- Evaluare: 4 din 5 stele4/5Quite a journey. If you want a book to make you feel all the things by the end then this is one. Grief, anger, humor, angst, pity, victory, and defeat. One star off for the length and excessive use of curse words which in my opinion do not ad anything to the story at all. At first it seems as if this whole book is going to be one whole trainwreck of a novel but hang in there some redemption does occur by the end. This won't be everyone's cup of tea but for me it has local appeal.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Masterpiece. I found myself feeling sad halfway through because I knew, that like all good things, this would come to an end. Truly one of the best books I’ve ever read. Demon is unforgettable.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5One of the best books I’ve read. Damon Copperhead is the voice of childhood trauma and the opioid epidemic. So thought provoking.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Great historical fiction about the opioid crisis in the south.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5The author gives accounts of addiction that will make you look at many addicts in a different light. I highly recommend it!
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Great story Coming of age in a troubled world No sugarcoat
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Absolutely incredible, this book is so heartbreaking with the cruel devastating truth of too many. It’s also bittersweet, in the same sense. This story shows the depths a person can fall to and still come out on the other side.
I couldn’t recommend this enough to anyone, it’s truly life changing with the perspective that you experience the story through. - Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Excellent book. Great narrator. A little long in the addiction part but a great listen overall and very enlightening.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5One of my top 5 books of all time and my favorite Kingsolver book. The narrator was amazing, which only added to the brilliance of the story.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Kingsolver has a gift. She somehow immerses her reader into a world perfectly accurate to the place and situation yet still artistically crafted into symbolic statement. Amazing. I am a recovered addict and I just do not understand how she knew what it was like in the mist suttle ways that people never think of. Rarely have I seen the world of addiction portrayed so very accurately and without stigma in any form of media. I was just astounded. And grateful.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Another great novel from Kingsolver! Wonderful narration and a riveting story from beginning to end.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Beautifully written about coming of age in Appalachia. Highly recommend.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5The book was hard to put down. Very engaging. Opened my eyes to perils of foster care and drug abuse. I now understand how so many people get so messed up.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5If the title of the book doesn't grab you, then Charlie Thurston's narration of it certainly will. Thurston has the accent and the calm matter of fact delivery of Demon's voice that reveals his quiet humor and his acceptance of the truths of his life and his struggle for survival. I've read other Kingsolver books, but this one is exceptional. While telling us about Demon's life, Kingsolver exposes the foster-care system, the anti-gay faction, the win at all costs sports community, and especially indicts the pharmaceutical companies and unethical doctors as the primary cause of the drug addiction rampant in Lee County. Paralleling the life of Demon with that of David Copperfield suggests that the present hasn't changed that much from the past.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Brilliant story and very timely given the U.S. opioid tragedy.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5I was amazed by the author’s ability to write in the vernacular of the region in which the story is placed. The narrator was excellent. I’ve read several of her works and I think I liked this one best. She very cleverly follows the story of David Copperfield.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5How could you not love Demon? Heartbreakingly beautiful story. Bonus…The narrator is fantastic.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5What a beautiful book. I enjoyed every minute of it.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5This is an insight into so many childrens’ lives that so many people never consider. It is a story of triumph and struggle. Oh my goodness! How did she do this? Read this book.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5As good as The Poisonwood Bible. Barbara Kingsolver is brilliant.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5First, I must comment on how beautifully this book was narrated the inflections and in the voice for the different characters. It’s like I could see demon copperhead in all the scenarios in the situation that he was in. Beautiful narration that brought the characters emotions to life easily. this beautifully written story that gave us a glimpse into the reality of addiction that touches your heart. The story gives you a window of the pain that many people experience and live with daily. There’s so much more I could say about this story.
I recommend this story it may start slow, but I’m so glad I gave it a chance. - Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5I read in done article that this was kingsolvers updated version of Oliver twist set in the Hills of Applachia in modern Day. I Never quite liked Dickens but this book was ok.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5The plot was so twisting. I laughed, I cried & I smiled.
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5I felt like I was with Demon on his journey from childhood to becoming an adult. Enjoy
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5Kingsolver's expert first person narration deeply involved me in the challenging life of her young protagonist. An extraordinary writer at the height of her powers. Highly recommended!
- Evaluare: 5 din 5 stele5/5There were parts of Demon Copperhead’s story that were hard to listen to but impossible not to. Amazing writing worth owning a print copy too!
