Before becoming a full-time crime novelist, he worked for Nomura, Japan’s largest investment bank, and Egon Zehnder, a Swiss consulting firm. He has lived, worked, and travelled extensively throughout Europe developing a keen interest in European history. His debut crime novel Labyrinth of the Scriptorium was awarded the prestigious Ayukawa Tetsuya Award in 2002, Japan's foremost crime novel award focusing primarily on the logic mystery genre.
