The Story Weaver - S.A. Wallace
The Eagle Feather
"The eagle is a truly great creature," he began, "It’s wings spread wide and reached out toward the ends of the earth as it glided along on the air currents above the timber…"
Eieeek! Eieeek! Eieeeek!
Looking up toward the sound, the two boys could see a black silhouette against the clear blue sky as the mighty eagle soared through the air. They were standing knee-deep in goldenrod and foxtail in a small clearing surrounded by timber. Toward the west they could see the outline of a small mountain range. They looked at each other in utter disbelief.
What happened!
shouted Rob. How did we get here?
I dunno,
said Bryan but this can’t be possible. We were just in a teepee with an old Indian!
Yeah and it was almost dark too, not daytime.
said Rob. I’m worried, none of this looks familiar.
Me too.
agreed Bryan. Hey, maybe this is a dream and if we close our eyes and think real hard we can stop it.
They both shut their eyes and concentrated so hard that beads of sweat formed on their foreheads. Suddenly their thoughts were broken by the eagle’s cry again. They opened their eyes with a start and suddenly a huge black shadow covered them.
As they looked up, the eagle cried again and its open talons caught hold of Rob’s shoulders. The ten year olds’ weight seemed like nothing to the mighty eagle as it lifted him off the ground and began rising into the sky.
Rob screamed in terror. Help me Bryan! Help me!
For an instant Bryan froze in terror too, and then he began to run after the dangling feet of Rob as the eagle carried him aloft. He tried to jump up and catch his feet but it was too late: the bird had already risen twenty feet off the ground.
Bryan screamed, Rob, I can’t reach you! Try to get free…. try HARD!
Try as he might, Rob could only thrash about as the eagle carried him over the timber and toward the mountains.
Bryan was in shock as he watched them soar upward. Then he sat down in exhaustion. His cousin was gone! He couldn’t believe it but he saw it himself. His heart pounding with fear and lungs bursting from the constant onrush of heavy breathing, he felt like crying at his loss! It was then that he thought of something else. He was utterly alone now in some wilderness land that he didn’t even know existed. He covered his face with his hands and began to sob.
"You give up too easily," a familiar voice said. "You should not feel such despair when you do not know the final outcome of the situation."
Bryan looked up and standing before him was the Story Weaver. He nearly jumped out of his skin at first and then jumped to his feet and ran to him shouting. The eagle took Rob and made it happen!! Get us outta here now and take us back to the teepee!
"I cannot,;’ began the Indian, "you must see the story through and you cannot go back alone. Your friend must come with you."
Well, I just told you the eagle took!
shouted Bryan, so make it bring him back and we’ll go home.
"I have no power over the eagle," said the Indian in a calm voice. "You must go and free your friend."
Bryan was shocked. I’m only 12 years old and I don’t know where the eagle went!
"You saw where it went," spoke the Indian, "but you cannot see exactly where it is from here. You must go to it and then you will see."
How can I get there when I don’t even know where I am
began Bryan.
"WALK!" broke in the old Indian. "It is not as far as it seems and you can probably make it before dark if you
