To my two fantastic daughters, Isabella and Elena, who occasionally teach me a few things about iPhones: you’ll get your new iPhones soon enough!
To my wonderfully loving and supporting wife, Danelle, whom without I would never have made it this far running my own business: here’s another project for you to help me promote!
To the late Steve Jobs, and everyone at Apple who helped create and refine the iPhone, this truly magical device that launched us into The New World of Technology: thank you for changing the world yet again.
Acknowledgements
I have dedicated my life to the study and application of technology for the average person. This book is possible because for the last eleven years I have been fortunate enough to run my own business helping people with their technology. I learn as much from my clients as they do from me and it is just a small part of this knowledge that I share with you in this book.
Running a business, even a independent consulting practice, takes a team. There are many who act as informal advisors, unpaid salespeople, and under-appreciated cheerleaders. I’d like to thank all those people who have helped me succeed in business, especially the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce and the Belleville Chapter of BNI. Truly those organizations have helped me build my business since when I was a business neophyte, eager to please, but completely naive to the real world of self-employment.
Julia Crunk of Ambassador Travel & Cruises has helped my family plan some wonderful trips for many years now. Those trips are what inspired the writing of this book, so I thank her for making those trips possible.
Cathy Davis of Davis Creative took my extremely vague ideas for a book cover and turned them into something that expressed my thoughts better than I could.
Lisa Adams of Adams Publications edited this book for me, helping me rein in a few (many) rambling thoughts into something that an average person could decipher. That and she fixed all those grammatical errors and typos that drive me nuts.
I’d like to acknowledge my two daughters for being the best travel buddies parents could ask for. When total strangers compliment my wife and I about how well-behaved and well-mannered you are, it speaks volumes. I’m just sorry that I had to spend some time writing this book instead of playing.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without my amazing wife, Danelle. Without her encouragement, outgoing personality, accounting skills, and marketing prowess, I would have been out of business a long time ago. She is the real reason behind my success. She’s also fun to travel with, which doesn’t hurt.
Chapter 1
My Big Fat Cheapskate Adventure
The impact the iPhone has had on our society cannot be underestimated. The iPhone has completely revolutionized almost every aspect of our lives. From work to play, from home life to travel, the iPhone empowers us to keep connected to our friends, family and our important data. For many of us, the iPhone has become an extension of our daily activities. Because the iPhone is small enough to keep in a pocket or purse, we take our iPhones everywhere. We can, and do, use the glorious device in almost every aspect of our lives.
The mobility of the iPhone makes it a perfect companion when taking short trips abroad, especially on vacations. However, the cellular companies in the United States (which we also call wireless carriers
or simply carriers
) charge us excessively high international roaming
rates when we use our cell phones in a foreign country. Everything from phone calls to text messages to using the Internet can end up costing hundreds of dollars if you are not careful while traveling abroad. The following chart should give you an idea of what I’m talking about.
