Yoga for All of Us - Peggy Cappy
INTRODUCTION
At this point in our human history, what was once reserved for the most rare beings is available to ordinary people.
—Gangaji, an American-born spiritual teacher and author
I love yoga. I’ve been practicing it and teaching it for thirty-five years. My hope for you is that once you have tried this modified and gentle approach, you will love yoga just as I do. Or at least you will try it long enough to experience its benefits.
If you have thought that the yoga you see depicted on the cover of national magazines and on TV is not for you, you are probably right. But my version of yoga is. I have modified a series of traditional poses so that almost anyone can do them. The adaptations make each pose accessible yet still offer the full benefits provided by the pose. For example, I have added a chair to most poses to provide support as a safety for balance work or, in essence to raise the floor eighteen inches to minimize the need for extreme forward bends.
If you are out of shape, over forty, recently recovering from an illness or surgery, overweight,.averse to gyms, with no classes nearby, or simply a beginner who wants to start gently… this book is designed for you.
I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised if you give yourself a month of honest effort of doing a little yoga every day because I know that you will see positive results. Yoga works. It has for thousands of years and now it will for you because this program of modified poses can be done by almost anyone at any time. For instance, my grandmother.
One day when I was ten, I peeked into my grandmother’s room. All I could see were feet and legs sticking up behind the bed. My curiosity got the better of me and I quietly made my way to where she was lying. I could see that she was in an upside-down position, resting on her upper back and head. I asked her what she was
