Reviews for The Walls of Jericho

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Walls of Jericho is set in 1997 in the West Bank and first in a series featuring Palestinian-American Ben Kamal, a former Detroit police detective whose police training makes him valuable to the new Palestinian police force. He's glad to help, but teaming up with the Israelis to find a serial killer was not part of the deal. Danielle Barnea is one of the best agents in Shin Bet, Israel's FBI. She, too, resists the assignment. While investigating the serial killer known as “The Wolf”, they also encounter a second crime, some Hamas terrorists who may be brokering a deal with Russian mobsters to move drugs into the new Palestinian state.
The characters of Ben and Danielle are extremely likable. The opposition that Kamal and Barnea face from their own bosses and from a hostile populace add a terrific layer of tension. It was a little formulaic but the glimpses into Arab-Israeli politics were interesting. I enjoyed this tense crime novel set in an intriguing Middle Eastern setting and might take a look at the next Ben Kamal and Danielle Barnea investigation.
