    This book is organized to make it easy for you to navigate. The Thai vocabulary pages are arranged alphabetically by their transliteration (phonetic spelling). Each Thai entry is followed by an English definition and two English words or phrases that match the Thai. This vocabulary is used in the comic and in the sample sentence below the definition. The Thai translation of the English sample sentence is followed by its transliteration and by a literal word-for-word translation, so that students can better understand the vocabulary used and how the sentence is organized. At the bottom of each page is a transliteration of the Thai used in the comic, followed again by its literal translation. Lastly, there is an English word index in the back of the book, which can help you locate matching Thai entries.

    Remember that the words and phrases listed in this book are mostly slang and idioms. While not vulgar, many of the entries are not what many adult Thais would call polite speech. The comics and sample sentences are the way teens and young adults talk when among friends. It is not recom-mended that you use this language when talking to people older than you, or in a professional setting. As a guide, we have rated the Thai vocabulary as (G) for general inoffensive words, (PG) for slightly stronger language, and (R) for words which should not be used except when with close friends. The English words and phrases are likewise rated.

    Language Notes: For Thai Language Learners

    There are two aspects of the Thai language that foreigners must pay special attention to when using this book. That is, the usage of particles and personal pronouns. Indeed, this is an essential part of learning Thai, regardless if it is the colloquial language of the young, or the more formal language of professionals. We'll begin first by discussing Thai particles—specifically, those short words that appear within (or at the end of) the sentence, and sometimes have no English equivalent. When listening to young Thais, you are likely to hear more particles being used than when talking with adults. In addition, they sometimes use particles that their parents would rarely or never use. The following particles are those that you will find in this book.

    à (อะ)

    A shortened abbreviated form of the lá or ná particle used to soften the sound of a sentence. This abbreviated particle is used especially among teens and young adults. In fact, some teens use à in almost every sentence.

    bpà (ป่ะ)

    The particle bpà is used by itself to mean let's go. It is also often used, especially by younger people, at the end of a sentence to signal a question, instead of using the traditional question particle mái.

    dtâng (ตั้ง)
