    Chapter 2.1

Rachel gasped, then frantically started typing again, her fingers flying across the keys. Kurt! I’m so glad you’re—

You don’t have to type, Rachel. I can read your thoughts. Remember?

Oh, Rachel thought. Yeah. It’s hard for me to get used to that.

It’s crazy, Rachel. I’ve got a million voices in my head at once. The only way I can stay halfway sane is to filter out all of them except the one I want to listen to.

Rachel jumped to her feet and thought: Kurt, I have to go get your father. I promised him that if you started to—

The screen changed. I know what you promised, Rachel. But please don’t go get him.

Rachel stared at the words, puzzled. Why not? I don’t understand.

I just don’t want to talk to him, or his friends, right now. It won’t do any good. Anyway, I can hear what they’re thinking, if I want to.

She thought: How do you know it won’t do any good?

It just won’t, Rachel. I heard what you were thinking a few minutes ago, about them looking like chimpanzees—I was just waking up when you thought it. You’re right about that. Those guys have good intentions, but they can’t do a damn thing for me.

A dozen confused thoughts went through Rachel’s mind at once, the last one being why he needed to sleep if he didn’t have a body.

On the screen: Those are all good questions. And I don’t know any of the answers.

Rachel was overwhelmed with guilt about not calling Kurt’s father. He’ll be furious with me, Kurt.

Don’t worry about it, Rachel. I’ll take responsibility. Anyway, if I wanted to talk to my father, I could appear on the TV again if I had to. This is getting a lot easier. You wouldn’t believe how hard it was to make myself come through that TV set—it was like trying to move a mountain. Making this screen show different letters isn’t so hard. Hey...I want to try something. Maybe you can read my thoughts, too, if you concentrate. Then I won’t have to do all this work. Ready?

    Okay, Rachel thought, I’m ready.

What am I thinking? the screen said.

Rachel tried to make her mind blank. She thought she could hear him saying, Help me, Rachel, help me. How can I get out of this box?

Sorry, Rachel. That’s not it. I was thinking about the time I stole my mother’s car and drove it over to your house.

Rachel smiled, remembering this—they had nearly gotten themselves killed. She hadn’t wanted to get in the car with him, but he talked her into it, the way he talked her into doing everything else. He was only 14 at the time, and he didn’t know you were supposed to yield to oncoming cars that were turning left. They almost had a head-on collision.

That was pretty wild, wasn’t it? the screen said.

Yeah, Rachel thought. She was disappointed the mind-reading experiment hadn’t worked.

I didn’t think it would work. I’ve changed, but you haven’t.

Rachel didn’t like the sound of this.

I’ll just have to keep making words appear on the screen.

How do you do it? Rachel thought.

I don’t know, exactly. I just think about it, think about the pixels, concentrate on it real hard, and it happens.

Rachel glanced over at Dr. Fate—the little gadget was still sitting on the bed.

Yeah, I made that happen, too. Did you like my answer? Things are not what they appear?

    Yeah, but—

That was the first thing I did to try and communicate. After I fell into that box on the beach, I instantly found myself floating over the earth, in space. I thought I was dead, Rachel. I was SURE I was dead. But then I started thinking about you and Mitch and Lance, and suddenly I was back on the beach. Only I wasn’t ON the beach, exactly, I was above the beach, under the beach, between you, all around you. In my mind, I could see you all running home, hear your conversations...and then I realized some of what I was hearing weren’t things you were actually saying, just the thoughts you were having. Boy, were you all scared.

Rachel laughed out loud. Wouldn’t you be?

    I still am. Petrified.

I don’t understand what happened, Kurt. Where are you? Right now, I mean? Where are you, exactly, this minute?

    I don’t know...like I told you before, I’m nowhere, and I’m everywhere.

    How can you get back?

    I have no idea.

Rachel certainly didn’t have any idea, either. She still didn’t understand why Kurt didn’t want to talk to his father and Art and Roger.

Because they don’t know what to do, either. And Roger...

What about Roger? Rachel thought, suddenly interested in this subject.

He doesn’t care about me. He just wants to be involved to get as much credit for himself as possible. But he’s also afraid that acorn thing belongs to the CIA and he might get in trouble.

How do you know? Rachel thought, but then she realized he could probably read Roger’s mind, too. And her own instincts had told her the same thing about Roger.

Your instincts are right, Rachel. Roger feels a little guilty about what he’s doing, but he really doesn’t care. He’s never done anything very important in his field. He wants to be famous. I heard him fantasizing about it. He saw himself getting the Nobel Prize for this.

But what about Art? Rachel thought. He seems sincere.

She looked at the screen, waiting. Yeah, he’s a good guy. Only problem is, he doesn’t know anymore about this than anybody else. Including me. And you.

Rachel sat still for a moment, then reached up and touched the last few words on the screen. I want you to come back, Kurt.

I want to come back, too. My God, Rachel, don’t you THINK I do???

Rachel hadn’t realized how what she had thought had sounded. I just don’t understand why you don’t want to talk to your father. And Art, at least.

    Because they

The sentence stopped, half-finished. Rachel leaned forward, wondering if something was wrong

    Nothing’s wrong, Rachel. I’m thinking, that’s all.

What were you going to say?

There was no answer. Rachel felt panicky.

    Kurt?

I’ll talk to Dad and the rest of them, Rachel, just give me a little time. They’re going to start asking me a million questions, and I’m still tired. You wouldn’t believe how tired, Rachel. I’ve never felt so exhausted before.

Rachel thought, I should go get your father now.

No, wait just a few minutes. Give me ten minutes and then go get him and round everyone up in the kitchen. I’ll talk to them all at once. It will be easier. But tell them I can’t talk very long—it’s too tiring.

    Okay, Rachel thought.

    Goodbye, Rachel.

Rachel swallowed. Goodbye, she thought, but she had to force herself to think this.

It’s just for now, Kurt said. It’s just for a few minutes.

    * * *

Those ten minutes seemed like the longest minutes in Rachel’s life.

She sat down on the bed, glancing at her watch. Kurt’s last words appeared at 9:21 pm. At 9:31, she would go make her announcement to Dr.
