      Two chefs cook up romance in the kitchen

      She could not have heard right. Elena Spinelli dropped the linen napkin onto the pile she’d been sorting and turned slowly to face her mother. You hired a chef? The ad doesn’t go in the paper until next week. Where did you find him?

      Her mother pushed away from the table she’d been using as a desk and stood. "Mia bella, we open in four months, Rosa Spinelli said. We need a chef now to create our menu, and in he comes. Like a miracle. From Calabria too. Just what Rosa’s Fine Italian Cuisine needs. He seems like such a nice young man. She grinned. Handsome too."

      Elena put her hand on her hip. You hired somebody off the street?

      Her father looked up from the bar where he’d been stocking shelves with the new wine glasses. You make it sound like we hired some street bum, Marco Spinelli said. "And don’t talk that way to your mother, carissima. It’s her restaurant."

      I know, Dad, but… Counting to ten, Elena inhaled the calming scent of the lemon and basil potpourri wafting over the room. Late afternoon sunlight streamed through the leaded window panes of the small, elegant dining area and spilled onto the polished wood floors and Art Deco glass-block bar. What had she been thinking when she left her job a year ago to help her parents open this place? There had been one setback after another. And now this, hiring a chef who just happened to walk in. But she could never stay angry with her parents for long.

      With a resigned sigh, Elena faced them. A chef is the most important person in any restaurant. What do you know about this guy? He’s Italian? From Calabria? Does he cook all the regions or just Southern? What’s his name?

      Rosa smoothed a hand over her short gray hair. You worry too much, Elena. He cooks all regions. We asked. He’s American, but his grandmother is from Tuscany and he’s been living in Italy. His name is Ryan. I can’t remember the last name.

      Ryan? Blood rushed through Elena’s ears. No, her brain shouted. It couldn’t be. Stress and overwork had her imagination boiling over like an unwatched pot. Helping her parents with the restaurant had brought thoughts of Ryan to her mind entirely too much lately.
