Diane J Cornwell learnt to read before she started school at the age of five. At school she learnt to write the words she already recognized. She loved going to school. When she was asked to write a story on her holiday activities, Diane wrote a story on what she wanted to do, not what she did, and earned an “A” grade for the homework. That started her on a life of writing fiction.A bi-product of all that reading was creating her own stories about determined characters who try to make the right decisions the first time during their adventures. Stories she can read over and over again just for the pleasure of revisiting the characters.Diane wrote her first full length novel in 2007, and hopes to have many more stories created in the coming years.

    About the Author

    Harry’s Detour

Harold Sayres Purdy, grandson of the current president of the United Systems, woke in darkness, lying on cold uneven rock.

He tried to sit up but his throbbing headache pounded faster, so he slowly returned to his horizontal position. When the back of his head touched the ground it felt soft. Soft rock? After feeling the area around his head he concluded his head rested on a folded lump of cloth, probably a blanket. Other than touch, he could not tell if his guess was correct. He slowly lowered his arm until it rested on his chest.

Flashes of memory flooded his mind, including his sister running with others, while he waited to take down the ones who threatened her safety.

What was her name? What was his name? Something starting with H.

Heath? No. Henry? No, but it was close. Harry? Yes, that name sounded familiar.

He blinked. The area above his head remained black.

His hip hurt. To ease the ache he rolled onto his left side. In the distance he saw a faint light, like a night light for babies. The outline of an arch separated the dark from the faint light. It looked like he was underground. Why was he underground? Why couldn’t he remember?

The pounding in his head had to mean he injured himself. Or someone hit him on the head and knocked him out. That could explain why he seemed to have misplaced his memory. If he really had no memory, he would not miss it.

Back to his name. Harry? Yes, Harry. But it was not quite correct.

A flash of memory. His sister running beside a male. Something was wrong with the male. He studied the memory until he remembered her name. It was Karen.

With that thought, flashes of vision flooded his mind. His name was Harold Purdy, but he was using Harry Smith and his sister was using Karen Smith. They were running away from the ones who kidnapped them.

He remembered the anger he felt when he was locked up with Karen, with no hope of help arriving to rescue them. And the feeling of hopelessness. Then he smiled as he remembered the kidnappers letting down their guard for a few minutes and he made the decision to escape. It felt good to turn
