Barb Sawyers

Barb Sawyers enjoys helping people make more of themselves through the written word, drawing on her 30 years' experience, chatty DNA and master's degree in journalism. Early on, she discovered the power of the spoken word by writing speeches for Ontario politicians. She learned how to pull ideas out of experts' heads as the editorial manager for the Canadian Life & Health Insurance Association. Seeking excitement and work-family balance, Barb went out on her own, helping a long list of clients ranging from big companies like Honeywell and IBM to medium-sized organizations such as Livingston International and St. Michael's Hospital to small nonprofits and businesses you have never heard of. She wrote all kinds of content--brochures, news articles, video scripts, media kits and more. As the digital revolution took hold, Barb and her associates at Toronto-based Sticky Communications welcomed the shift to web pages, intranets, blogs, e-newsletters, social media and other web-based communication. Barb loved the more relaxed writing style that was emerging. Although more people wrote like they talked, often they were still too self-centered, missed the fumbles that spellcheck couldn't catch and defaulted too much to "awesome" and "think outside the box." To help, she blogged about writing and communication. Through leadership roles, she encouraged her colleagues at the Toronto chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators. She wrote the book Write Like You Talk-Only Better. She gave workshops. She spoke. She guest posted at Problogger, Ragan.com and other big-shot sites and contributed to the Globe and Mail and other publications. She's now making plans to share her expertise through online learning. And she's still writing and talking, thinking and socializing.
