About this ebook

BREXIT shenanigans have turned the eyes of many Brits to distant shores. However, despite being viewed as "Little Britain", life for a British expat in New Zealand is not always an easy transition. This collection of humorous short articles, previously published in a rural NZ newspaper reveals how New Zealand is the same, but different. A must-read for all potential immigrants.

Author

Helen Leggatt

Helen Leggatt is a post-graduate student, College of Arts, and freelance writer specialising in travel, e-business and genealogy. After emigrating to New Zealand from the UK in 2004 Helen was asked to write a regular column for the Malvern News in Canterbury, New Zealand. Called A Brit in the Boonies it took a sideways glance at the process of adapting to a new country, despite the lack of a language barrier. So popular was the column among ex-pats and locals that the San Diego Reader (USA) published five extended versions and the column has now been collated into an ebook of the same name. The BREXIT movement in Britain has seen Helen's book become popular as more people look to emigrate from the UK to distant shores.

    INTRODUCTION

Is New Zealand really a ‘little Britain’? Emigrants from Britain, and beyond, often believe life in New Zealand will be the same – the same language, the same culture, the same foods. But it isn’t. It’s different in many ways – some subtle, some startling. Some differences are such that around 20% of emigrants return home. New Zealand is not ‘like Britain in the 1950s’. It may be the land of milk and honey, but that milk and honey costs a lot more than ‘back home’. And that’s before you factor in the costs of regular visits ‘home’.

Prepare yourself for life in New Zealand by reading this short, but humorous book. Compiled by British writer and expat Helen Leggatt these short articles first appeared as a column in the Malvern News, a local newspaper distributed in rural Canterbury, New Zealand. The San Diego Reader subsequently published a serialised version.

The twenty short articles document observations of everyday life in rural New Zealand while learning to live in a new, and surprisingly different, country. Discover Helen’s cock-ups and successes, misunderstandings and steep learning curves. From housing to horticulture and jam to jandals, even the mundane can be a hurdle for a Brit in the *Boonies.

*Boonies: the middle of nowhere, countryside, rural.
