Introduction: Creating and Selling Your First Audio Product

In the early 1990s, I decided to create some audio cassettes for sale. I booked time in a professional recording studio, where I had two technicians cue me as I read the script into a large, bulbous microphone and they caught any mistakes that required a redo. In two hours we’d recorded my first audio product. Then I had to sit around for an hour as they transferred their high-quality reel-to-reel onto a master cassette for me. I repeated this process several times, building an inventory of related audio programs for writers.

At the time, I lived near the Berklee College of Music in Boston, which had a recording store in the neighborhood that duplicated 100 cassettes at a time for me at low cost. I sold the cassettes at my adult education classes and writers’ conferences where I spoke. My little audio business got a big boost when one tape was featured in the Sounds True catalog for several years and offered by the Writers Digest Book Club. In those pre-Internet days, quality audio production required professional help, and product distribution was challenging and not very open to do-it-yourselfers.

Creating and selling audio products is so much easier today! Add to that the online services that enable you to take payments from shoppers you don’t know and never meet, and with just a little bit of know-how and planning, you can now conceive, create and begin taking money for your first audio product in less than one week. Truly!

This ebook distills the lessons I’ve learned and taught about how to select an easy-to-manage audio format, record and edit a complete, saleable audio program and then set it up for sale online. If you teach or
