About this ebook

My name is Lt. Samuel Dundy Archer and through the loyalty of my soldiers and the love of the woman I hope to marry, I may get out of this revolution with my breathing privileges intact. Humans made the Hybrid soldiers and then we abused them. Now they have turned on their creators in a revolution that has left many of my fellow officers dead, and despite treating my men as equals I may be facing execution myself.

    Collar - Sigurd Olson

    Collar

    By A. Sigurd Olson

I hate the collars. I hated them when they were on the Hybrids, and I hate them now that Humans wear them. At least I have my life and escaped the collar, which is more than can be said for many of my fellow Humans on the colony. I’d have been killed myself if I hadn’t followed the suggestion of the Hybrid sergeant under my command. For that matter if it hadn’t been for the death of the woman I was going to propose to, I would never have been here in the first place.

I lay back on my bed and looked at the only picture of Carol I had left. With one finger I slowly traced the outline of her face. She had been such a happy person, so full of life it seemed that nothing could get her down. I had never had a day so bad that she couldn’t make it better just by letting me talk. She was a good listener. When I’d finished talking she’d almost always say something that helped me make a bit more sense of the world. It was still hard to imagine that she had been four years my junior. That had all ended one year and a lifetime ago. This was the first anniversary of her death and it had reopened the wounds leaving me depressed and distracted. The alarm to do an inspection of my troop’s barracks sounded and I dragged myself out of bed hoping that something would take my mind off my emotional hell. My unit is the best in the colony. My Hybrids know what I expect out of them and know what it meant to exceed expectations. I’m not soft on them by any means, but I do know how to use the carrot to its best effect.

When I do have to use the stick I had found that it’s all about technique over force. I rarely have to do more than give a Hybrid a severe dressing down to get one to shape up. The only times it is any worse than that was when I received a new transfer who is slow on the uptake of how things work. I haven't needed to use the powerful shock feature of a collar since shortly after I became a lieutenant. Many of my fellow lieutenants think I’m too soft and the higher ups think I’m an anti-collar sympathizer, which I am, but they can’t argue with my results.

When I walked into the barracks I heard Sergeant Drake give the command to prepare for inspection. Every Hybrid rushed to his bunk and stood stiffly at attention. I inspected them in a robotic fashion, looking, but not really seeing. It seemed that all was in order but it all seemed of little consequence in the over all picture of things. I just wanted to hole up in my private room to be alone and miserable with the photo. Being miserable was easy, trying to do anything else was almost impossibly hard.

I was back in my room, which doubled as my office for ten minutes when there was buzz from the door’s entry system. Who’s there?

Sir, it’s Sergeant Drake. I would like to speak to you considering a rather important matter.

I sighed. I didn’t like the tone of his voice. It sounded like I had missed something obvious in my inspection and now he was now going to call me on it. I couldn’t afford to look weak in front of Hybrids, that is the first commandment of leading them. Come on in Sergeant.

When Drake entered I saw a look on his face that appeared to be one of concern. Since he was a canine like many of the Hybrids under my command it was hard to say sometimes. I motioned for him to take a seat, which he did so with some hesitation. It’s not normal for a Hybrid to sit in front of their CO.

    What brings you here Sergeant?

Drake rubbed a hand between his floppy, Rottweiler, ears. Well sir, I’m not really sure how to begin.

Spit it out Sergeant. I was getting annoyed; I wanted to be left alone. I didn’t want to be talking to my sergeant.

Well sir, the boys and I are a little concerned about the way you’ve been acting lately.

I gave him a long, hard stare. What do you mean by how I’ve been acting?

Sir, I’m trying to keep from over stepping my boundaries, but you’ve been distracted lately. And… Well how can I put this? We know you were crying before you came into inspect us just now.

What makes you think I’ve been crying? I was angry. If I had been crying I hadn’t realized it.

We could all smell the tears, sir. We’re concerned about you, sir. You’re the best lieutenant any of us have ever had, and you’ve got us worried. We don’t want something to happen that would mean you’d get replaced.

I sighed heavily. A canine Hybrid’s nose never lies, if they said I had been crying then I had. It’s just bad memories coming back to haunt me.

Drake stood up and put a hand on my shoulder. Almost any other Human would have punished him for it. It made me realize what kind of trust he had in me to dare it. Sir, if I may be so bold, you need to get out of here for a few hours and unwind.

I eased his hand off my shoulder. "Where do you suggest I go, Drake? I don’t want to drink my self back into oblivi0n, so I’d be just as
