About this ebook

This book will level the playing field for anyone looking to buy a new or used vehicle – especially all women. Education is the first line of defense against fraud and deception. This book will help you make well-informed decisions before you spend your “hard-earned” money.

As a mother of two daughters, I recently watched one of my daughters conduct ‘extensive’ research and get a good deal on another vehicle. I was very impressed with the steps that she took and realized that I had to share her experience with others who also was looking to buy a car with ease, comfort and stress-free.

We all remember the housing meltdown in 2008. I was hoping that the car industry which is another very ‘unethical’ industry –would also be exposed. Since this did not happen –this is why I am writing this book.

It use to be a rite of passage for all men to teach their children especially sons all about the car industry. But with so many women being single parents raising children on their own, this needed knowledge is not readily available to those that really need it.

Even though the car industry is a man’s world – many men are just as uninformed as women when it comes to buying a car -- but of course most will never admit it. Because of this lack of knowledge, I have provided an easy-to-read and understand guide that provides options to arm yourself with the power and knowledge to become an empowered “car shopper.”

It is my hope that all men and especially women will recommend this book to their daughters and sons for years to come. This book was designed to provide you with insider secrets of the car industry and to lead you through an easy step-by-step process on how to utilize Internet technology and other various resources to help you get the best possible price on your next vehicle.

With this remarkable buying guide, you will reduce your shopping time by up to 90% and will have positioned yourself to save up to several thousand dollars on your next vehicle purchase with minimum hassle.

The problem most consumers have is how to use good information to get the best deals. When buying an automobile, consumers should take the time to research and prepare to effectively negotiate the best prices.

After reading this book and at the end of your car buying process, you will be able to enjoy your new or used vehicle –knowing that you did everything possible to get the best deal! Good luck!

    About the Author

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to my two lovely daughters who are business owners and future leaders of America. Both of you have made me very, very proud. It is my hope that both of you will continue to buy your cars with ease and comfort. Don’t forget to listen, learn and laugh - often.

PREFACE – A NOTE TO THE READER

This is Part I of A Woman’s Guide to Buying a New or Used Vehicle: Everyday Secrets You Should Know (Part I). Part II of this book deals specifically with maintaining and caring for your vehicle once you buy it --so it will have a good retail value when and if you decide to trade it in.

Buying a car no longer has to be a hard or frustrating process especially for women who have had to deal with shady and dishonest car dealers in the past. According to car experts African American women pay on average at least $6,000 more for a new car than others -- African American men pay $4,000 more -- White women pay $2,000 more -- while White men pay $2,000 LESS.

This book will level the playing field for anyone looking to buy a new or used vehicle – especially all women. Education is the first line of defense against fraud and deception. This book will help you make well-informed decisions before you spend your hard-earned money.

CHAPTER 1: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW UPFRONT WHEN BUYING A VEHICLE

    First Things First

Automotive salespeople are trained to win. Whether they are men or women, salespeople, are really no different. Sure women will handle you more delicately and be more caring, but like men, their ultimate goal is to come out on top by earning big commissions from car sales.

Car salesmen are paid on a percentage of the profit of the sale. This percentage varies from dealership to dealership but usually runs in the 20% to 25% range. Some dealerships offer 20% up to 40% commissions -- which is solely up to the dealership management and owners.

Some dealerships use sales teams. In this method, one salesperson will give you the test drive, do the write-up, etc. and the team manager will close the deal. In this case, they share the commission. So if you buy a new car for, say, $300 over the invoice cost, the salesman may earn only a $50 to $75 commission.

In addition to his commission, though, the salesman can earn bonuses that are available from both the dealership and the manufacturer for good sales performance. Usually bonuses or spiffs are offered to any salesman who sells a certain amount of cars in a month.

Spiffs may also be offered for meeting certain profit goals (for example, selling a car for $1,000 over the invoice cost), selling certain profit-making extras (paint protection, extended warranties, etc.), selling a particular hard-to-sell vehicle, and so on. This is also why car salesmen make more money on selling used cars than new cars. New cars come straight from the factory loaded with incentives so the margins are typically small.

According to a recent national survey, the average commission for car salesmen is $250 per vehicle sold. The average selling price per vehicle is about $1,000 over the invoice cost. And the average number of cars sold is 8 to 10 vehicles per salesman per month.

Car salesmen practice and improve their skills everyday. Only by conducting ‘extensive’ research and taking an ‘organized’ approach to making your purchase will you truly become a more satisfied customer and be able to get the best deal.

Here are the preliminary rules you should follow:

    • Be prepared! Don’t be led by car salespeople. They are there to sell. You are there to buy. It is not the same thing.

    • Be prepared! Have your shopping list, budget and
