Preface
When I was young, Korean society was undergoing compressed modernization. We were taught that the admiration of western culture and dislike of traditional culture were the virtues of modern people. Korean society finally found the time to look back upon its traditional cultures after the rapid growth of its economy.
What really caught my attention was the folk remedy. Because the process of treating disease is accompanied with existential experiences, I cannot help but to reevaluate the culture of our ancestors after experiencing its effects. Because of my unique body constitution, I have always had to be careful even when drinking cold water in the summer, ever since I was young. After coming to learn a folk remedy, I changed my drinking water habits. As soon as I did, instantaneously, my stomach problems that I thought I would have to live with for the rest of my life disappeared. Now, on a hot summer’s day, I can enjoy a cold beer with my friends.
What is interesting about Korean folk remedies is that the beliefs have a consistent philosophical system. The ideas understand the world as a combination of two opposite energies and the cause of all disease being from the destruction of that balance. In ancient East Asia, philosophy and science were not two different things in their view of the world. With the invention of the microscope, modern science discovered a microscopic world, but this also resulted in a narrowed range of vision. Due to this, modern people lost the ability to see the macroscopic system.
Just as in the debate over milk and vitamin C, modern science does not provide consistent information. The authority of dietetics gives birth to star nutrients for each age, but it completely forgets that it had spread incorrect information in the past. This is the same for modern medicine’s allopathic treatment. The course of treating one disease causes another. In such irrationality, there is a difference in the world view on nature. What Korean sages found was that the body is a very complex system and that it is organically connected to nature and humans.
