    Mnemosyne and the Lethal Waters

    Rachel Rose Teferet

Malka stuck her toe into the dark water teeming with half-seen creatures. She shivered, but not from cold. Like an uprooted tree, she’d lost everything in a storm—her job. Her house. The man she thought she loved. She was already dead; this would be easy. Ready to forget, Malka threw off her towel and plunged in.

The freezing water shocked her, startled her eyes wide open. Tadpoles, some with legs, some just over-sized spermatozoa, swam overhead. Malka sank to the slimy bottom and exhaled. Her breath bubbled up. The green water turned black as she lost consciousness.

Suddenly, she was gasping for air, sprawled out on her back on dry ground. Someone was pumping her chest and breathing air into her lungs. Malka was indignant—the water had numbed her, had made her body light. Now she was wracked by spasms shuddering through her like a jack-hammer. The hotel is closed, and so is the pool—didn’t you notice the sign?

Malka looked up and saw the sign, as if for the first time: Stay Out. Lethal Waters.

I should take you to the hospital—

No, Malka protested. There was something—no, someone—she needed to avoid there. She couldn’t remember who it was, but it didn’t matter. She wasn’t going. I’ll just go home…

I’ll give you a lift, the stranger said. Where do you live?

Malka opened her mouth, then closed it. She couldn't remember her address. It was the strangest feeling.

Do you have a wallet? ID? Keys, anything? But Malka had nothing.

Come on, I'm taking you to the hospital. This is serious. The stranger led Malka to her car. Like a mother with a stubborn child, she buckled Malka into the
