    A Letter from the Editor

Welcome back to Uncharted Frontier! We are very proud to present our seventh issue to you! It’s amazing to me that we’ve come this far so quickly already. It’s amazing that so much time has gone by, because it certainly hasn’t felt like it. As we prepare for a winter blizzard outside HQ, I can’t help but go over some of our previous issues and remember how much I enjoyed preparing and reading each one.

We’re going to be doing an anthology issue for our one year anniversary: a selection of our favorite submissions throughout the year since our first issue. We’d like to put this in print, but that will depend completely on the budget. We’re exploring our options now. There’s six months to go yet, so get your submissions in! Show us your best! Wow us! You might end up in our first print issue!

Welcome back to the Frontier, everyone! Let’s take another wild ride!

    Feather And Vidalia

    By Tom McDade

As a kid Mark Crosley loved Dead End Kids movies on TV. He wished he were poor, tough and talked like those urchins. His father twice slapped him across the face when he imitated their speech. He read all James T. Farrell authored and called himself Studs in his fantasies. Family money and a Grosse Pointe address embarrassed him. He graduated from the University of Chicago where he majored in Economics, minored in English. He was accepted at Cornell but his mother considered it inferior to Yale where his siblings studied so he escaped the Ivy League. There were no post grad studies in the Merchant Marine or wanderlust like Kerouac or Bellow experienced. He’d never stolen cars like Dean Moriarty or been a book thief like Augie March, although he’d shoplifted a copy of Catcher in the Rye his first year in St. Ignatius Prep. He regretted not leaving a trail of fancy schools in his wake like Holden. He’d never spent a night in jail for drunkenness, brawling or resisting arrest. He missed out on war because his uncle served on the Draft Board. He never took part in a peace or civil rights march. He lacked the guts to just leave, travel to Alaska to work on the pipeline, drift off into frozen wilderness like a Jack London character. He never hiked the Mississippi from Itasca to the Gulf or attended the Woodstock Festival. He did smoke a marijuana joint but never dropped acid. He almost joined the Peace Corps but his parents objected. He wanted to write a novel but he felt he lacked the imagination as well as the experience. He read incessantly
