About this ebook

Seven Steps to the Marriage Altar: How to Practice the Principles of Betrothal is a practical book laying out the Bible principles of how to get to the marriage altar following Biblical betrothal principle. It was born through bringing up children who worked their way through the pressures of the dating culture and found God's way to find a spouse as well as to get to the marriage altar pure.

These principles have been mined out of the Bible because of the need of guiding numbers of young people on how to get to the marriage altar without all the scars of immorality that many bear. God intended that marriage would be the highest human relationship that should be enjoyed, but sadly it has sunk to low levels in our society today. Many have played the dating game and then have to wrestle with those memories as time goes on. God did not intend for it to be so.

When choosing the Biblical practice of betrothal that is illustrated in Scripture a young person and their parents are often left with few patterns to follow. That is why this book was written. This book lays out many of the Bible principles and then applies those principles to the practice of how to get to the marriage altar in a way that would please God.

No one is perfect, and following God's principles will not mean you get to the altar without any mistakes, but it will set you well on your road to begin your marriage life more in line with God's purposes. That in turn will help your marriage get off to a great start.

The Seven Steps listed in the book are:
Step One—Asleep
Step Two—Alert
Step Three—Approach
Step Four—Assessment
Step Five—Agreement
Step Six—Attraction
Step Seven—Altar

This book will open doors of understanding of this ancient and Biblical practice and give you reason to believe that a great marriage can await you.

    Chapter One

    Introduction

Of all the love stories in the Bible, I think there are none that are any more beautiful than the story of Ruth and Boaz. It is one that my heart thrills at every time I think about it and read it or preach on it. We want to specifically look at how Ruth gets to the marriage altar, found in chapter 3.

"Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.

Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.

And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.

And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.

And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law bade her.

And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.

And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.

And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.

And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.

And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman." (Ruth 3:1-11)

I am not going to be able to cover the whole story of Ruth in detail, but I want to hit the highlights for you. In chapter one Naomi returns to her homeland of Bethlehem-Judah. She has come back with her daughter-in-law Ruth. Both of these ladies have been recently widowed.

Ruth, the daughter-in-law, was a Moabite woman, but she has left the country of her birth and her idolatry and believed in Jehovah-God of the Jews. Her life has been transformed and she has made a commitment to stay with her mother-in-law and care for her.

In the first verse of chapter 3 it is clear that Ruth has gone to sleep as far as her desire for a husband is concerned. She is not the one that is requesting the issue of a husband. Instead, it is Naomi that has her eyes on a certain man that she thinks will be a good match for Ruth.

In verse two, Naomi begins to talk about Boaz who is of their kindred. In Deuteronomy chapter 25, God had commanded that when a man and a woman were married and the man died without an heir having been born, then the next unmarried male of his kin was to marry the young lady. He was called a kinsman-redeemer. Usually the next of kin would be a brother. But in this case, there were no living brothers.

In verse three Naomi explains to Ruth what she is to do. She was to take a bath, put on clean clothes, and then present herself to Boaz at the threshingfloor where he was threshing wheat. Naomi gave her specific instructions on just how to do that.

In verse four Ruth agrees to do exactly what her mother-in-law has told her to do. So she goes to present herself to Boaz. When you read this story, you might have some questions about what exactly is going on. I won’t go into all the details, but let me just say that this was a very public place, there were servants all around, and what she was doing was not improper in any way.

When Boaz wakes up at midnight and realizes that there is a woman at his feet, Ruth presents herself as the kin of Boaz, and reminds him of his responsibility. Boaz admits in verse eleven that not only is he willing to fulfill his responsibility, but he extols her virtue and calls her a virtuous woman.

I find it quite interesting that Boaz, a Jewish man, called Ruth, a Moabite woman, a virtuous woman. Ruth had been a pagan, and even though she had turned to the Lord, she would have still been considered a Gentile dog by most of the Jews. Yet, Boaz had seen her true character.
