Steve K Smy

Steve K Smy was born in Ipswich, Suffolk - a picturesque part of England famed for being part of Constable Country, where the renowned artist John Constable worked and produced many of his finest paintings. He has lived virtually his whole life there. He started writing for pleasure when he was 13 years old, with a science fiction novel! Naturally, his writing was less dominant for many years, as he and his wife Jenny raised their three children to adulthood and independence. He returned to writing seriously in February 2012, following a long illness. Since then, he has written and published, in ebook format, several short stories and, in ebook and paperback formats, four novelettes and a novella, and has been working on a major fantasy novel. His published stories include tales in three series: the Thief series of fantasy short stories, the mixed genre G1: The Guardians series (two novelettes and a novella, to date) and the science fiction Captain Henri Duschelle Stories (a short story and two novelettes, so far). The novelettes and novella have now been published in paperback. Fans of the G1: The Guardians series should be aware that a novel (part four of the series) is going to be published very soon! Mr Smy is also a blogger with a growing readership for his blog Imagineer-ing, Again, fans of the G1: The Guardians series will be happy to hear that they can find background information on the stories, especially the political shape of the world, in a special section of the blog site! Steve passed away on November 22nd 2013 after long periods of illness. His novels are being typed up and published by his son, Damien. Any profits are to be donated to Help for Heroes, a charity that Steve supported.

    Part 1

Captain Orgery could only watch as the three shuttles were torn apart in a terrifying display of energy. The boats, carrying fully one third of the Kublai Khan's crew, had safely entered the planet's atmosphere. The sensor and probe data had indicated a nearly perfect Earth-type world. Then, as the boats fixed a landing location and began their final descent, it had happened. Sheets and bolts of unbelievably powerful energy had leapt as if from nowhere. The boats, their deflectors inadequate to the assault, didn't stand a chance. Even now, there were still screams of agony and terror being broadcast from the main screen speakers. Every member of the bridge crew just sat, fixated on the dreadful scene on the screen, their faces pale and drawn as the screams assailed their hearing. Then it was over. The engine cores of the boats were breached and they exploded, leaving nothing above particle size.

The elderly captain, now in his third century, sagged in his command chair. Despite a lifetime of cultivated inscrutability, tears flowed freely over his hollow cheeks. Slowly, far too slowly, his mind began to function again. In a broken voice, he ordered the screen off. He then instructed the ensign on navigation to set a course for Igran, the closest major Fleet Base. It was all he could do. With a short crew and the mission a failure, there were no other options. Even so, he felt like a broken man. Igran Base would witness his retirement from Fleet. He had nothing left to give.

Thadeus Orgery was a legend. He had been responsible for discovering over a dozen planets that were either suitable for Terraforming or were good enough to not need it. Nobody in Fleet's Long Range Exploration Service had done more to extend humanity's spread through space. And nobody had faced as many dangers as he had in his epic career. In fact, he should have retired more than sixty years before the
