One:
The dust danced in the air as the sunlight hit my dad’s desk as I shuffled some papers around. The lights were off as I didn’t want to bring any attention to us. I was trying to find some clue to where the keys were. I’d traced the whereabouts to his office from my computer through the email he sent me just a few days ago. I looked over at Zalgon. He looked out of place in an office setting. His denim jacket with the sleeves cut off, tattered denim jeans and well-worn cowboy boots. I shook my head and stopped studying him and kept on with the search for the keys. Along the wall there were a few filing cabinets. Deciding the desk was a lost cause I went to the first cabinet. The screeching sound made me flinch a little, but I started to go through the papers. Nothing was in here what-so-ever. Just invoices from customers that he worked with: apparently his ‘cover’ had been to pose as some type of accountant.
Boy, hurray up.
Zalgon whispered.
Come on, you know you could take out anything that comes through the door.
I advised.
Not him. Not Zelter.
Zalgon started to tap his giant foot on the brown carpet. He was obviously scared. I turned around and started to scan through the manila folders in the cabinet. This was useless. If he was hiding something he wasn’t going to hide it in his office. It was to convenient for the bad guys to come here and find something. Even though the way I found the office it didn’t look like anyone was here before us. I sighed in frustration.
There is someone commin…
Zalgon was in a panic. He only took two strides and was already behind me. Where do we go?
Zalgon asked continuing to panic. I scanned the room and I saw a brown door that was slightly open.
Over there, big foot.
I said trying to pull him towards me, but it didn’t work. What did work was him shoving me into the closet. As Zalgon tried to maneuver himself into the closet he shoved me deeper into the corner. It had been a hot day and that made Zalgon extra aromatic. If whoever had dropped by didn’t make this a quick visit I might die from toxic fumes. I was about to whisper something to Zalgon, but then I heard the voices in the room.
There has to be something here.
I heard the familiar voice of my mother say. That only could mean that the person that she was talking to was…
I hope so. We need to hurry up. The boy will probably try to find them himself.
The raspy low tone of Zelter stated. The time seemed to crawl to a stop as the two went through my father’s office. I was almost suffocated in this small closet and was about to burst out not caring about what was going to happen when I heard:
There is nothing here. It makes sense. He always covered up his tracks well.
What do you mean?
My mother sounded confused.
After our falling out he stopped trusting people. So, he made sure that no one knew what he was doing.
What is our next course of action then?
We will have to find your son. He has to be the key to this.
I shouldn’t have let him go…
Well, it was your daughter who interfered. I thought you had her under control.
Your son must have gotten to her some way or another.
I heard Zelter respond harshly. The only problem with this situation was that I was really getting a case of claustrophobia with Zalgon’s butt shoved in my face. but , you don’t have to worry about her, once I find her she will pay for her actions. But we must go. We wasted enough time. With every hour that passes by they get the upper hand.
And with that said I heard the door open, and then, a few moments later, the door closed behind them.
Come on, get your big ass out of this closet.
I attempted to push Zalgon with all the force I could muster, but he didn’t budge. A few moments passed and then he flung the door open into the office. I shoved myself past him, and took a breath of fresh air.
Why did you wait so long?
I needed to make sure that they didn’t double back.
Zalgon asserted.
Wow, that was a smart idea.
I was surprised. I guess we should leave since we didn’t find anything and since the dynamic duo didn’t find anything that means that we should just look somewhere else, but I don’t know where.
I was trying to think what was the next course of action when suddenly the push of the office door brought me out of my thoughts, and there stood the two people that I didn’t want to see ever again: my mother and the man that killed my father, Zelter.
Oh, what a surprise this is.
Zelter moved to the right of me and Zalgon.
You know I almost missed you guys.
I was starting to get into panic mode.
I’m glad that you made it easy…
