Nisa La Bella - History Files
If you wish for a vacation where history is mixed with the over-indulgence of senses, and luxury sneaks through the old narrow streets and long gone stories, then choose Nice. Start your adventure in a city that fulfils all of your wishes and charms you with the simple walks on the azure shore.
French Riviera Map
Nice seems to be the place where history is being told while enjoying a glass of fine champagne. The contrast between its great historical past which goes back about 400,000 years, the archaeological discoveries from Terra Amata (find out more) announcing with trumpets and trombones the former existence of one of the oldest settlements in the world right here in this city and the off-handedness of the luxurious escapades on Promenade des Anglais make Nice an ideal destination for tourists.
Remains of past life on these lands, obvious even to the untrained eye, have been traced back to year 350 B.C., when the Greeks from Marseille decided to settle here for good, naming the place Nikaia
in honor of victory goddess Nike
who had offered them divine support to defeat their Ligurian enemies. Historian Strabo says that as the inhabitants of Marseille repeatedly raided the nearby lands, they discovered this delightful place, and because its colourful landscapes and rich soil, decided to immediately take it into custody.
Nikaia's territory, which was bordered by the waters of river Var at the west, used to form the border between France and Italy, the city currently being situated at a distance of only 30 km away from Italy. Although Antibes, situated in the close vicinity of Cannes and also of Nice, was part of Italy's Prefecture due to a decision by the Senate of Marseille, Nice was the proud property of Marseille's Prefecture.
Little by little, the Romans fell in love with this oasis and chose to be only visitors at first, finding peace of mind, relaxation and rest here. Being protected by the Marseille metropolis for more than 110 years, the city successfully blocked incoming attacks from barbarians, flourishing in harmony with customs, traditions, spirituality and Greek education.
Antique map of Nice
Nice also had a rival in the roman city of Cemenelum, presently known as Cimiez district, (find out more), which continued to exist as a separate entity from Nice until the Lombards conquered the territory. The Romans too successfully imposed their power in Nice, if only for a short period, whereas the Greeks continued to follow their own laws and traditions, nobody being able to shake their beliefs even if they were forced to respect the dominant city's dispositions.
Around year 48 B.C., the Greeks in Marseille and Nikaia were bound to kneel in front of conquering Rome. In the 1st century A.D., not only Provence and Nice had to bow to the Romans, but the entire Gaul. Cimiez, inhabited by Romans, began to bring shadow upon the fate of Nice, so while all the conquerors' efforts were headed towards the prosperity of the first, Nikaia was gradually forgotten.
However, in the 6th century Nikaia overtook Cemenelum. Once the Roman Empire fell, the former Roman rival of the city vanished as an administrative entity. Nikaia became part of the French Empire, prevailing with the importance of the harbor and its commercial power.
In the 7th century, Nikaia had to face the attacks coming from the Lombards and the Saracens, which ruined its resources and robbed its population. In the Middle Ages the city became part of Italy's history and wars, as an ally of Pisa and enemy of Genoa. The king of France, as well as the Holy Roman Emperor, tried to subdue the territory, but Nikaia kept its head up.
In the year 1388 Nice went under the authority of Count de Savoy Amadeus VIII. From this moment on, directly or indirectly, the city became part of the Savoy House history.
In the year 1543 the Turks tried to conquer the city, but their efforts proved to be useless.
In the 13th and 14th centuries, the kings and counts of Arles reunited this territory with Provence, placing it under the reign of Princes of Aragon, the House of Anjou, Kings of Naples, and finally, the Crown of France.
At the end of the 17th century, in the years 1691 and 1705, the French army destroyed the city's defense. In the year 1713, Nice went under the reign of the Duke of Savoy, who would also become King of Sardinia.
Between the years 1792 and 1814 the Alpes-Maritimes region was created and went back to France’s territories. Following these events, Nice returned under French control, this time with the population's assent.
Once Napoleon's reign fell, Nice once again became part of Sardinia, but its language and culture had already considerably pulled it away from Italy. On the 24th of March, 1860 Napoleon III together with Victor-Emmanuel II, King of Sardinia, decided that Nice should stay under French authority, the decision being unanimously approved by the city residents. From that moment on, the city experienced an economic boom – roads and railways were built, the population grew fast and tourist Nice took shape, waiting for its guests, as shiny as ever.
The Story of Catherine
The legend says that in the summer of 1543, during the siege in which the Turks were attacking Nice, Catherine Ségurane, a heroine of the city, played the most important role in driving the Turks away and saving the city. A simple laundress, Catherine succeeded in taking down the Turkish flag carrier and took his flag, bringing victory to Nice.
Another version of the legend says that our heroine had the inspiration of showing her naked posterior to the Turkish infantry, who were literally shocked by this lack of decency and retreated. However, truth is such gesture would never be considered shocking to that effect, therefore it is probably safe to say that our laundress's story is a mere local invention. decency and retreated.

When to Visit Nice
Nice has a Mediterranean climate, meaning that it enjoys a warm breeze and hot summers which last up to the end of September, when the beaches are still filled with tourists and locals willing to catch the very last sunshine. Unlike its neighbour, Provence, Nice lies under the shelter of the surrounding hills that are protecting her from the unwelcomed mistral
wind, unbearable for the exposed cities.
