    About the author

    Introduction

    I am selfish.

    I realize that now.

At first I thought I would keep my little secrets about photography for marketing my vacation rental home all to myself. Then, my family began to travel more. And I started to get pretty frustrated with all the poor quality photos of vacation properties that wanted my money.

I was willing to fork over several thousand dollars to stay at a beautiful vacation home. However, after looking at the different listing photos, I wasn’t sure I wanted to pay so much for a place that didn’t look too nice. Yes, I knew that the photos don’t do it justice – but I wanted a place that looked worth the money from the start.

So in my selfishness, I want you to succeed.

My husband and I have two large vacation homes in Branson, Missouri, and have been hosting guests since 2007. There are several factors that contribute to our great success, but one of the keys has been the images of our vacation homes.

I strived to truly show off our property with the photos. I did not want to hear the comments of:

Tyann, we love your place. The pictures just don’t do it justice.

Yikes. If you are hearing that, you know it is time to fix your photos.

The comments you want from your guests are:

Wow, we love your house! It is exactly like what we saw in your photos.

That is when you know you’ve got it right.

It’s no secret that vacation rental listings with fabulous photos receive more inquiries and more reservations than a listing with shoddy photos.

But what seems to elude the average owner is the secret to obtaining those magical property photos, without hiring a professional real estate photographer.

Create Killer Vacation Rental Property Photos reveals the hidden secrets, the ancient myths, and the rock solid truths about vacation rental photography and how you can achieve the mysterious and elusive photos for yourself.

    Chapter 1

    The camera

    Myth

I need a fancy camera to take awesome photos.

The answer may be a complete surprise to you, but, I promise, it is the truth.

    Truth

Use the camera you already have.

Yes, you read that correctly. Use the camera you already have. There are some exceptions, such as if your camera is broken or about to release the shutter one final time. But there is absolutely no reason to go out and spend $2,000 or more on high end camera equipment.

    Secret

    The camera is your tool.

What? Doesn’t the camera take the photos when all I do is push the little button? Absolutely not! The camera does not create the image – YOU create the photograph.

You don't take a photograph, you make it. – Ansel Adams

Whether someone uses a smartphone, a simple point and shoot, an entry level DSLR, or a sweet full frame professional camera, it
