Gillian Sze
Gillian Sze is the author of multiple poetry collections and children's books, including The Night Is Deep and Wide and My Love for You Is Always. Her work has been nominated for the Quebec Writers Federation’s A.M. Klein Prize for Poetry and has received awards such as the University of Winnipeg Writers’ Circle Prize and the 3Macs carte blanche Prize. Her writing for children has received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews. Gillian studied creative writing and English literature at Concordia University and received a PhD in études anglaises from the Université de Montréal. Originally from Winnipeg, she now resides in Montreal, where she teaches creative writing and literature.

To Love, To Desire, To Destroy
I affirmed that — for me — personality is a mystery;

Fruitful
We speak of nobility
like we can dine on it
We are scared
tatterdemalion
hiding behind organdie
We savour the cool feel
of the spotted jewelweed,
crush the leaves to administer
after playing in poison ivy,
the convenience that the two grow together
We hope that the rest of our lives
could be that propitious
We are good
sometimes
We are all little children still
stopped on the sidewalk
