      Jeffery Street was helped through the double doors of the Horfield police station by two tall, stocky police officers with indifferent faces. He was still struggling to get free as they walked him to the desk for booking.

      At the desk, he was re-read his rights and given the option for legal representation, which he rejected with a plea of innocence and a threat that the police would be ‘needing lawyers by the time he was finished.’

      Roy Wilson eyed the offender from an alcove by a water cooler in the corner of the lobby. Nobody had seen him. He had been waiting for this day for a long time, but the sense of justice he thought he would’ve felt, knowing Jeffery Street was behind bars, didn’t hit him. Instead, he felt numb. Perhaps he knew Street would try everything in the book to worm his way out of the charge against him. He had been successful thus far in prior arrests, but not this time. This time things were going to be different, thought Wilson.

      Wilson looked at his wedding band and thought about his wife, who at this moment was getting dinner ready. It was Italian night, which meant he had pizza or pasta to look forward to. One more week, he said to himself, then my sweet retirement. He had thirty years of murder investigations to get out of his system.

      Cell 3, said the commander behind the desk.

      The two officers, who hadn’t let go of Street, escorted him through the double doors and to the last cell on the left: Cell 3.
