    Chapter 1 – The Hunt

This will be a successful hunt said a hungry Jason Coulson, from a long and tiresome winter. The air was crisp and calm, as a breeze refreshingly caressed his face. The sun, moments away from breaching the bleak horizon. The Dawn of a new day beckons him to live, and offers a new chance for survival. Pressure looms over Jason’s shoulders, as his family and friends at home haven’t had a decent meal in weeks. Luckily, this place is filled with opportunity. The finger lakes of what once was the state of New York, have always provided ample sources of food. It is a peaceful area, lush with hills and valleys filled with wildlife, a perfect place for the mind of a tired family man. The winters can be demanding on the soul, but Jason can feel the warmer airs stirring up through his bones. Spring is around the corner.

I wish Sam could join me thought Jack as the proudness of fatherhood warmed his soul. He’s growing up so fast, but he still has a lot to learn to protect himself in this world.

Jack Coulson hasn’t always lived in this area. His parents fled here from Philadelphia after the breakout of 2013. His mother, Sally Coulson, pregnant with him at the time, was a humble city accountant. His father, Jack, a war veteran, a Major in the U.S Army, and an entrepreneur. After being injured overseas he came home to run his own construction company. It was a modest life, but a life happily lived. Jack worked hard to support his expanding family while Sally filled her days with learning things she has always wanted to learn. She enjoyed her gardening and cooking the most, these being ideal hobbies for someone of her caring nature. It was your everyday American family, doing their best to provide for one another. Until life was ripped from their grasp that is. Jason has heard of how his parents used to live through Jacks stories, but having never known such a life it is hard for him to understand how life could have been.

Finally muttered Jason under his breath, as a large buck came into his view. Everyone is so hungry. It wasn’t the biggest deer he had ever seen, but it will feed the town until spring none the less. He pulled back his bow string and took a deep breath, paying extra attention to his aiming. He knew that everything was riding on this moment. The fletching of the arrow whispers in the wind as it flies through the air, its path never wavering. Jack smiles as the warmth of victory flows over him. His job is complete, the town can eat once more.

I need to hurry. I have to get back to camp before the sun goes down Jason said with thoughts of the terrors that await him in the darkness. Jason knows best that he is not the only predator out here now. There are animals in these woods that like to use their sight and smell to their advantage in the darkness of night. Jason, being just one man, would not stand a chance in this scenario.

New Seneca is the name given to their new home. This name chosen because of its location, sitting just a mile from the bottom of Seneca Lake. A lake that stretches farther than the eye can see. Its depths overflowing with fish, now that people no longer abuse its riches. Boats still remain in the harbor, left alone and unguarded, only to slowly sink to the bottom. People used to come here just for fun back then, without a care in the world, but now this place is needed to sustain those who still try to make a life here. This camp, gently tucked into the safety of the walls of a gorge, is home to many survivors. At its base, the entrance is guarded by tall wooden walls with several makeshift houses hidden behind them. This place is a refuge for the weary, surrounded by forests on every side. Voices echo through the valley and crackling fires whisk golden lights across the wet walls of the gorge. It is a beautiful sight to behold. Food, shelter, and clean drinking water make this the best second chance at life there could be.

Cheers filled the air as Jason returns with nature’s generous bounty. Everyone, young and old, share the same sigh of relief, knowing yet another obstacle has be toppled. Most of these people tried to survive in other parts of the area on their own, but slowly came to realize the security that this camp brings. They all bring their own traits and advantages and even their own stories to tell. Everyone helps in any way they know how, a necessity for a strong community. Some earn their keep by sewing fields of vegetables while others hunt, or even build. Electricity has been lost in most places now. We still have some form if it here though. Not the power that once was, but a manmade power used to help light the night and keep the beasts at bay. This power comes from a bicycle and a few batteries, so it isn’t much, but it is a blessing when you know what it’s like to not have any at all.

How did your new bow perform, Jason? said William, the local greensmith, a new profession in this day and age. Unlike a blacksmith he is a man of the trees and makes the majority of what we need now. Bows, walls, contraptions, anything needed, the greensmith builds, with Jacks help of course. Jack has taken William under his wing to teach him what he can, while he can, being too old to do much of it on his own now.

I couldn’t have asked for anything better Jason replied. You will have to make one for Sam as well

Is he that old already? Said William.

He has to learn sometime William, just don’t tell his mother, ok? Jason said with a smirk on his face.

Jason met his wife at this camp. A beautiful girl by the name
