About this ebook

A series of diary entries through the eyes of a little girl as she tries to survive the end of the world.

"Surrealistic and haunting, this story gets under the skin like a virulent infection... Jenner's slightly twisted yet subtle narrative as seen through Kellie's innocent eyes is compelling..." - George Wier, Mystery Author (Bill Travis Mysteries)

This is a collection of the first 3 parts of the Kellie's Diary series, including 2 additional short stories.

This book is entirely from the viewpoint of a little girl writing to her diary. You meet Kellie, a bright and inquisitive child living the typical suburban life with her family. She goes to school, complains about lunch, and thinks boys are gross. She also writes daily entries into her diary, whom she calls "Barbie." However, her world is turned upside down when a strange illness takes over the city; during a massive outbreak, Kellie finds herself completely alone and stranded. Follow Kellie's journey as she ventures out into the world, braving dangers of all kinds, both natural and unnatural. She must learn to survive based on her own wits, and she will also learn which instincts she should trust... all the while telling "Barbie" what is going on and what she's thinking.

"Be prepared... it is quite sad seeing all the death and destruction through a child's eyes, but I'm telling you it is worth it in the end." - Blood, Sweat & Books

"This book actually handles the genre in exactly the right way... The writers obviously didn't think, 'How can I make my zombies special?' Instead, they asked, 'What's an interesting story I can tell within the context of a zombie apocalypse?' That, in my opinion, is the best route a writer can take... Telling the story of a zombie apocalypse through the eyes of a child is a fun approach and is handled wonderfully." - Brandon Hale, Author of "Day Soldiers"

I think God took all the good people away. If there is a God. I'm not so sure anymore. Wait, will I go to hell for thinking that way?
    -- Decay of Innocence

When the Dead walk the Earth, the REAL demons emerge...
    -- Death of Innocence

First, I need to point out that these books were originally published as 6 separate graphic novels, Kellie's Diary #1-6. Then they were published as two compilations. Kellie's Diary - Decay of Innocence (Kellie's Diary #1-3) and Kellie's Diary - Death of Innocence (Kellie's Diary #4-6). I was confused about this and ended up buying Kellie's Diary #2 after reading Decay of Innocence. When I started reading, I was like, wait I already read this.. I eventually figured it out. Looking back, I don't know what confused me so much.

Decay of Innocence starts off in January of 1993. At the start of the book, Kellie is 9-years old and she is living a fairly normal life. Gradually, we hear that more and more people are getting sick. By Chapter 5, we realize that something is terribly wrong. Kellie is stuck by herself at school and trying to escape the zombies.

Kellie is very smart and resourceful, even though she doesn't seem to know anything about zombies. Her first goal is to get to her house. Once there, when she doesn't find her family, her goal is to get to Oregon (to where her grandfather lives). She is hoping to find someone from her family alive.

Throughout the series, Kellie is very strong and does what she needs to in order to survive. She protects those she loves and tries to protect herself as well. She meets many people along the way, some good and some bad. And it seems like the zombies are not the worst thing left in this scary world.

I enjoyed this series very much. I started reading the Decay of Innocence during the Readathon last Saturday and when I finished, I immediately bought Death of Innocence and kept going. It was hard to read about the abuse Kellie suffered. No child should be forced to deal with such evil. It was interesting to read about the zombie apocalypse from a child's point of view (a child who manages to survive on her own for quite a while).

    Recommended to:
Fans of graphic novels and apocalyptic stories. This is definitely an adult book. There is a lot of graphic violence including child abuse and sexual abuse.

Reviews and Accolades:

Surrealistic and haunting, this story gets under the skin like a virulent infection... Jenner's slightly twisted yet subtle narrative as seen through Kellie's innocent eyes is compelling.

... This book actually handles the genre in exactly the right way... The writers obviously didn't think, How can I make my zombies special? Instead, they asked, What's an interesting story I can tell within the context of a zombie apocalypse? That, in my opinion, is the best possible route a writer can take... Telling the story of a zombie apocalypse through the eyes of a child is a fun approach and is handled wonderfully.

--Brandon Hale – Author, Day Soldiers

Be prepared… it is quite sad seeing all the death and destruction through a child’s eyes, but I’m telling you it is worth it in the end.

--Blood, Sweat & Books

The simple style this story is presented in sometimes tricks you into taking it at face value; but it's the reading between the lines that gives you the full sense of horror in the world around the main character. She has grown in a world dying around her, and her point of view is distinctly that of a child; we see it in her acceptance over time of death as something that simply happens and the notion that her family may in fact be lost, and even in her simple joy over a toy store. Kellie's character is very realistic, and that makes it all the more frightening to watch how the world is folding around her and her inability to change it, only to survive as best she can.

-- Amazon Reviewer

While many stories in the zombie/apocalypse genre across various mediums have more than drained this genre of its originality, Kellie's Diary seemed a breath of fresh air. So many have tried to showcase the loss of innocence in these horrific events, yet none had yet to take this perspective to its core. A story told through the eyes of a child, as they tell their story to an oft forgotten security blanket, the imaginary friend. Written with the simplistic vocabulary of a child, this tale feels as if you're truly reading a journal written by a nine year old…

--N.R.T., Amazon Reviewer

I love this new perspective on a post-apocalyptic world. Through the eyes of a little girl, you see things in a different light, and imagine things as if you were the same age. It makes you reflect on your childhood and what you would have done in the same situation had you been that age and been faced with the same adversities. Kellie's strength and resilience is inspiring and the story that she tells is captivating.

Special thanks to George Wier for your guidance and belief in us. You helped us more than you’ll ever realize. In fact, we dedicate this story along with the entire Kellie’s Diary series to you. Honestly, without your inspiration, this story would not exist. In case we didn’t say it enough at the time, thank you.

We love you very much. Rest in peace.

Note From the Authors

Kellie's Diary is the story of a young girl who has found herself alone after her world is turned upside down and taken over by the dead. She confides in her diary, revealing what she goes through, how she feels and what she learns.

We began this story in late 2012, and it has evolved quite a bit over the years. What began as a video read-along series quickly evolved into a series of short story e-books. This volume contains parts 1-3, and it includes two previously unreleased stories in the Kellie's Diary universe: prequels of two important characters in Kellie's life, for better or worse.

We sincerely hope you enjoy this story – there is much more to come in the future. Please let us know what you think by leaving a review. Your feedback is very valuable to the creation of these stories.

Thank you!

Chapter 1

Mon, Jan. 18, 1993

I got back home from Grandpa's house yesterday. It was a really long plane ride, but I slept a lot, so that's why I'm writing now and not yesterday. Mom and Dad said I had to go back to school today, and I'm really mad about that. I had to go to school at Grandpa's too, because I was there for so long.

So when I went to school this morning and talked to the principal to get me back in, they told me something that really made me upset. Remember how they moved me to 4th grade when I was at Grandpa's? Well, they put me back in 3rd! I did so good when I was in 4th grade, but now I have to go backwards! I'm not stupid! It's not fair! I don't want to start over! I think Dad was really mad about it, but I don't know why, he doesn't have to go back to 3rd grade.

Well, I still went to school today, even though I was really mad. It was the same teacher I had before I went to Grandpa's, Miss Florence. She was happy to see me, and I was too, because she's really nice, but I felt sad that I wasn't still in 4th grade. I missed the friends I had here, but I miss my friends at the other school too. I don't know, I felt really weird today.

But today something cool happened... I remembered that I've been writing in you for a whole year now! It's like you're my friend... a secret friend! I can tell you anything I want, and nobody tries to find out what I say!

I want to give you a name. I want to call you............. Barbie. Is that okay? I know there are Barbie dolls, but all I do is dress them up, they just like to play pretend.

I'll talk to you tomorrow, Barbie!

Chapter 2

Tue, Jan. 19, 1993

I still feel weird going back to 3rd grade, but it wasn't so bad today. I got to play kickball with all my friends at recess, and we had a lot of fun! Kevin Scott is still kind of mean. He took the ball after I kicked it and ran all over the field and didn't give it back. I almost won the game for my team, but he ruined it! I went to get it back and he stuck his tongue out at me and ran the other way. I hate boys!

Oh wait! There were two kids that got sick in class today and had to go home. I told Mom and she said, I told you the school lunches are bad for you. If lunch made them sick, then I'm happy Mom makes me my own lunches. Besides, I heard it was tuna salad today. I hate tuna. It's stinky and feels weird in my mouth.

You're lucky Barbie, you don't have to eat yucky stuff.

Wed, Jan. 20, 1993

Hi Barbie! I just got back from dinner. Dad ordered pizza! I had 4 whole pieces to myself! Mom says I shouldn't eat so much. I don't know why she said that, my sisters are too little to have pizza so I don't have to share much, but we don't get pizza a lot, and I really wanted some. I'm really full now and feel really tired. But I feel good too.

Oh, remember the two kids that got sick yesterday? They still weren't at school today. I heard a couple of the bigger kids were sick too, and three of the teachers. I'm afraid that it's the flu! I don't like flu shots, they're really scary. They have big needles and they hurt a lot. I don't want to get sick. Dad says I'm fine and I don't have any symptoms, so he's not worried, but he kept telling me to wash my hands all the time. He worries about me a lot. I don't think I'll get sick, I'm just fine.

Thu, Jan. 21, 1993

My whole class is getting sick! Miss Florence said a lot of parents called their kids in sick today. There were only 10 kids in my class! One of the bigger kids said that there were only 3 in her class. This is scary! This must be a really bad cold people are catching. I still feel okay. I don't feel sick, and my family is still good.

I'm actually writing to you in school today! Since we don't have a lot of kids, the lessons go really fast. It’s raining so we couldn't go outside for recess and lunch, so Miss Florence gave us free time until the end of school.

Miss Florence just coughed. I don't know why, but I feel scared. I just want to go home, Barbie.

***

Okay, I'm back home, I just finished dinner. Dad said on the news they were talking about a flu going around and that tomorrow after school they were taking me to a doctor to make sure I don't get it! I really don't want that shot, I've got it before and I always feel funny after getting it. Dad says that it’s better that I feel a little funny from a shot than really sick from the flu. I guess he's right but I still don't want to do it.

Chapter 3

Sat, Jan 23 1993

I'm sorry Barbie. I didn't write to you yesterday. I'm really scared right now. I just woke up and I'm in the girl’s bathroom at school by myself. The door is locked. I wonder if the monsters are gone yet. I got to school yesterday morning and found out there were more people sick! We had a substitute teacher today because Miss Florence got sick too. His name was Mr. Drew. There were only 6 people in my class. No one came back from being sick.

It was really bad. One of the windows in our class broke and a scary looking man climbed in. Mr. Drew went to go stop him but the crazy man BIT his arm! It bit him really hard and he had really bad cuts. We all started screaming! I think I'm having a bad dream right now. Maybe I'll wake up. I'll close my eyes right now and wish really hard to be back at home. I'll be right back.

I'm not dreaming, Barbie. I'm still here. The monsters are real! There were a lot that started coming into the school and they went around biting all the teachers and the kids too. Everyone that got bit fell down after a while, and they were bleeding a whole lot. And it looked like a couple of kids were still being bit after they fell. Some of them got back up like they were okay, but they turned into monsters too and started biting other people!

I didn't know what to do. I put you in my backpack and I tried to run away from the school, but the monsters were everywhere, in all the
