    INTRODUCTION

After multiplying the bread and fishes to feed the multitude in the desert, Jesus’ disciples went over the sea towards Capernaum by ship. They did not make their permanent abode in the desert to enjoy the company of the multitude and live on free bread, which was supernaturally multiplied. They undertook the adventure of seeking a new experience with Christ.

And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,

And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum.

And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

    John 6:16-17

The above reference from the Gospel according to St. John makes it look as if the disciples went over to the other side on their own accord. It says, when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea. The narrations of Matthew and Mark, however, show that it was Jesus who constrained the disciples to go over to the other side. Human beings don’t naturally want to go over to the other side of life. They love to maintain the status quo. They hate to take risks. The comfort zone is the shrine of many religious people.

And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

    Matthew 14:22

Jesus sent His disciples to the other side while He stayed behind to send the multitude away. It must have been difficult for Jesus to let the Disciples cross over to the other side. He definitely needed them to help Him do some things but He had to sacrifice His personal interest. Many leaders keep their followers in the desert to serve their selfish interests.

And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.

    Mark 6:45

The word, constrain is the Greek word anankazõ, which means to compel, necessitate and constrain. You don’t always plead with people or try to convince them to go over to the other side. In many situations, God literally forces His people to go over to the other side. There are great depths and heights in the things of the Spirit we have not attained. It takes a lot of faith, sacrifice, wisdom and discernment to keep in step with the Spirit. The flesh cannot comprehend the ways of the Spirit and walk in them.

The disciples were constrained to go over to the other side because the thought of tasting life on the sea and the other side of the sea without Jesus’ physical presence was a difficult one. Jesus wanted them to experience life on the other side so much that He compelled them to go over to the other side. Sometimes, we have to push people away from their comfort zone around us in order to give them a future.

The first three books, Knowing the Spirit, Following the Spirit and Living by the Spirit dwelt on life in the desert as the disciples and the multitude believed God for their sustenance. The multitude at the other side of the sea was not content with watching Jesus multiply bread. They asked Him how they could work the works of God. They attempted to move from seeking the things of the flesh to seeking the things of the Spirit.

It is the Spirit that quickens and not the flesh.
