    Introduction

Ever since I created The Write Initiative many people have asked me how I did it, and if they could do it too. It's a tough question to answer quickly. I realized that to really do the subject justice, I needed to set it all down. So here is a straight forward guide to starting and running your own freelance writing business, whatever kind of writing you like to do.

So why choose freelance writing? Well, there are a few wonderful reasons. I like to earn a good living while working from home. No more rush hour traffic, I write off part of my mortgage and utilities as a tax expense, and I set my own hours. Freelancing is also one of the few entrepreneurial endeavors you can launch without a big financial investment to get started. No visit to the bank loan manager necessary. You can get started today with equipment you likely already own.

The origin of the word 'freelance' comes from a knight or mercenary who sold his protective services to any lord willing to pay; hence he was a 'free lance', not belonging to any one lord or king.

A freelance writer also sells his or her services to a company or individual on a per project basis. Each project should have a set time frame and a clear goal, and once that project is complete the 'free lance' moves on to the next lord…I mean, client.

As a freelancer, you provide a meaningful service that rewards you with excellent pay. There are many possibilities and hundreds of opportunities for freelance writers to complete projects for outside clients. You can also write your own money-making websites and e-books. You can take all the knowledge you've gained over your lifetime and turn it into intellectual property, then use that asset to earn money through a website, an e-book, or through traditional publishing.

For me, the best part of being a freelancer is the quality of life. I love being my own boss. I know that how much I make (or don't make) is all up to me. There is absolutely no limit on how much I can make, unlike a traditional job where my pay is pre-determined and not likely to increase all that frequently. As a freelancer, the potential is limitless.

And being my own boss also means I choose how to schedule my time. I might cut out early so I can spend time with my son or play in my garden. If you're a parent who wants
