About this ebook

Chocolate has always attracted me. From the time, a local shop owner gave me a small, free bite, I have been hooked. Most of my life, I've seen chocolate as a sinful indulgence, an addiction that only leads to a fat stomach.

But chocolate isn't sinful. It's an amazing vegetable that does much for us and makes us feel good too. In this short ebook, I'll explore a brief history of chocolate, chocolate's nutritional qualities, its amazing "gopher tech." And, of course, no ebook on chocolate is complete without a sweet recipe.

Author

Shireen Jeejeebhoy

I write a mix of books: novels, biography, short nonfiction. I set my novels in Toronto, my home for most of my life, a city of contradictions and ripe with conflict possibilities. My debut book, LIFELINER, is set in Ontario, but also travels down to New York and across the pond to Sweden. My life is one big question mark, has been ever since I sustained a closed head injury (or mild traumatic brain injury or concussion, whichever moniker is fashionable) in a four-car collision. But my writing keeps me grounded, my photography takes me to other places. I wrote about it and treatments I discovered in my revised memoir CONCUSSION IS BRAIN INJURY: TREATING THE NEURONS AND ME. When I'm not writing, reading, taking photographs, I'm hunting for good coffee and sensational chocolate.

    Chapter One: An Introduction

CHOCOLATE has always attracted me. From the time, a local shop owner gave me a small, free bite, I have been hooked, some would even say addicted. Most of my life, chocolate has been considered a sinful indulgence, an addiction that only leads to a fat stomach.

But chocolate isn’t sinful at all. It’s an amazing vegetable that does much for us and makes us feel good too.

In this ebook, I’ll explore the nutritional qualities of chocolate. Chapter One provides an overview of chocolate’s history and manufacture and of its nutritional composition. Chapter Two will look at cocoa butter, the key ingredient in making chocolate smooth and luscious. I’ll balance the (un)pleasant facts with a recipe using chocolate. And Chapter Three will reveal the metabolic benefits of theobromine, a relative of caffeine and one of the active ingredients in chocolate.

Chocolate is a vegetable, a bean that is seductive and seducing, making pain almost disappear, if only temporarily, and bestowing a nice buzz of well being on the lucky chocolate eater.

The original South Americans knew plenty about this surreal earthly blessing long before luxury-loving European aristocrats did. Montezuma drank a cold, bitter concoction of chocolate, corn meal,
