Descriere
According to researchers working in the field of loneliness, John T. Cacioppo and William Patrick, "at any given time roughly 20% of individuals—that would be 60 million people in the US alone—feel sufficiently isolated for it to be a major source of unhappiness in their lives."
In the eBook, Plugging Into The Social Network, author Paul Horton presents the case in an essay, for Facebook acting a stepping stone towards making social connections for those who have difficulties interacting socially in a real-life encounters. He has reason to believe that a fair percentage of persons who are shy & lonely, may in fact have Asperger's Syndrome or be on the borderline of the Autistic Spectrum (and are prone to those conditions).
The main feature is a guide on how online connections can lead to making acquaintances & friends in the real world. He shares tips on how posting the right material can boost self-esteem and confidence which can help a person then push themselves to seek out social engagements in their local area. To top things off, an extensive Resource Section is provided with lists of articles about various aspects of Facebook and social networking along with info on crowdfunding, as well recommendations for general info and related Facebook Pages to Like.
While the target audience for the book is primarily individuals on the higher-end of the Autistic Spectrum, it will also be of great interest to others who may be shy and have difficulty socializing.
From the Introduction:
"I see Facebook as being a significant piece of the puzzle in helping the shy & lonely to gain confidence & boost their self-esteem so that they can in turn, make some real-life connections. Facebook has made connecting with a tribe, easier than ever, it's up to individuals to take the steps to make the social connections waiting to be made.
To me, the biggest thing about Facebook is sharing; whether it be how you are doing, something you created, something you found to be informative, humorous or inspiring. When you share something that gets a large number of Likes and positive Comments, it definitely boosts your self-esteem and the majority of my Posts, get at least a few Likes and sometimes ten or more Likes, along with multiple Comments on a regular basis. So I want to share some insights on how to make your FB experience one that is personally rewarding and helps you in socially connecting."

About the Author
Preface & Acknowledgements
Just I was finishing up this eBook, the book Be Different, by John Elder Robison was released. Mr. Robison has become one of the leading spokespersons on Asperger's Syndrome after his first book became a Bestseller; Look Me In The Eye, a memoir on growing up and into adulthood, dealing with what was then, an unknown condition. So I choose exercise my right as someone on the Autistic Spectrum, to Be Different as far as some of my stylistic choices when it comes to writing.
I wrestled a bit on a formating/style issue and I decided that instead of putting FB (FB stands out better than fb) before the various elements of Facebook, that I would just capitalize those various elements.
A term which I use interchangeably with Status Updates is Posts, but if used as a verb, I use post(ing). One other term I prefer over the one FB uses, is Defriend over Unfriend.
Also I believe in liberating the Ampersand: &, which should be an option for writers in the 21st Century. I suspect many others feel the same way and I found an example of someone who shares my sentiments on the subject. I came across: The Case for the Ampersand, by Paul Rand, A critical review of Eric Gill’s An Essay on Typography.
The essay was first published in 1931, and Gill was not only a British typographer, but a sculptor, engraver and writer.
The absurd rule that the ampersand should only be used in ‘business titles’ should be rescinded, & there are many other contractions which a sane typography should encourage.
I will also (as a stylistic choice), sometimes capitalize certain words for emphasis.
A Big Thanks to the People I've Connected with on Facebook, who inspired me to write this eBook as a Testament to the Power of Social Networking. And also to Marc Broder for persistently suggesting I get on FB and Michael Prentis who I was hanging out with and suggested I should write about FB tips, which sparked the idea for the eBook. Except for a couple of temporary jobs, I've been unemployed since I've been on FB and I tried to stay optimistic that something would break for me regarding a number of efforts. FB provided me with an outlet for Creative Expression and a sense of being connected to a like-minded group, brimming with many interesting persons (in addition to many interesting persons I personally know).
Special Thanks to:
Edward Robertson for permission to use his graphic art for the cover: Social Networking is Good; Emily Gibson & Gary Freeman for proof-reading & editorial suggestions; Voytek Skibiniski for formatting assistance; John T. Cacioppo & William Patrick authors of the book: Loneliness ... Human Nature and the Need for Social Connection, W. W. Norton & Company, Publisher; Richard Laermer for agreeing to represent me for another book (which really gave me much needed Hope) and for assistance with various aspects of this eBook, especially the promotional help; my Mom for helping to keep me afloat during desperate times; Irene Villanueva and Dave Hood who also helped out when I was in tight spots.
Dedicated to:
All the Lonely People and the Founders of Facebook for providing a platform for extending Human Connections. And also to my cats: Cali, Cato, Ash and Chubs.
As Mickey Rourke put it:
Sometimes when a man's alone, all you got is your dog and they meant the world to me.
Introduction
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.
Making even casual friends can be difficult for those on the Autistic Spectrum and also for those with conditions where shyness and social isolation is a factor. Recent studies on the effects of Facebook and users moods, provides evidence that utilizing the social network could be beneficial for persons who have difficulties interacting socially in a live setting.
Facebook has become a Vast Social Ocean on the World-Wide-Web. You can turn your News Feed into an info-feed with rivers & streams of knowledge & amusements, along with currents of human connection. So for those who haven't bothered to check out FB or who tried it, but didn't quite get it, you should consider giving it a shot or trying again (with a little more effort).
Some of us are drifting through life in need of various levels of support & connections, with a sense of purpose being a prime component. FB can be used to expose yourself to a variety of stimuli and sometimes something we come across by chance can inspire us to chart a new course in life. There are islands of various communities to be discovered on FB where you can find a tribe to connect with.
FB is being used for a variety of purposes by individuals and other entities. The target audience for this eBook is primarily individuals on the higher end of the Autistic Spectrum, as well also others who may be shy and have difficulty socializing.
While there are many books available on FB & social networking and a number of books that deal with advice to persons with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) & High-Functioning Autism (HFA) and general aspects of life, not much has been written on FB & AS and others on the Autistic Spectrum. So the purpose
