THE ESSENTIALS
These points apply to any event in which you are acting as host, whether it’s a launch, literary festival panel, a bookshop Q&A or a concert-hall interview. If you get these right, you’ll be loved by audience and speakers alike.
1. It’s Not About You
The single biggest complaint from book event audiences is this: ‘The chairperson talked too much.’ The audience is not there to hear the host, no matter how knowledgeable or erudite he or she may be. It doesn’t matter how much preparation you’ve done, how many truly original and fascinating opinions you have about the writer’s work, or how you might better answer the question. Your job, while being in total control, is to be all but invisible. Even if you are supposed to be a ‘participating chair’ – a poisoned chalice, and a term audiences do not understand - nothing infuriates an audience more than a talkative host. The focus must be, always and absolutely, on the guest/s.
