About this ebook

King David, a man who knew God and served Him faithfully, was accustomed to having challenges. This book is mainly a study of the courageous manner in which he dealt with an attack of the Amalekites on his family and the loved ones of the men who were with him. The attack in question, like other challenges in life,generated two kinds of people based on their reactions, namely, WAILERS AND PREVAILERS.

You don’t wail and fail because something different or stronger attacked you but because you are no different from the majority of people – the majority are wailers. Your nature, and not the magnitude of an attack, determines your reaction to crisis – if you are strong, every attack looks small.

    INTRODUCTION

    War is inevitable in life. Battles are a constant feature of a believer’s life. We grapple with many different issues. Being righteous and gentle does not insulate us from warfare. We are sometimes attacked on all sides by demonic forces, wicked people and dangerous circumstances. Having faith in God does not prevent temptations and trials from invading the serenity of our environment. The apostle Paul was a man of great faith, yet he was troubled on every side by satanic schemes.

    6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

    7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. 8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not

    in despair;

    9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

    10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

    2 Corinthians 4:6-10

    The apostle Paul walked in the light of the knowledge of the glory of God and had the glorious treasure of God – the light of the knowledge of the glory of God – in him. This spiritual endowment attracted – though we often think it should have dispelled – various attacks of the devil. He was troubled on every side, perplexed, persecuted and cast down but these things did not make him feel desperate, distressed, forsaken or destroyed.

    Faith in Christ is characterised by affliction and opposition. Satan uses demons and takes advantage of the weakness of the flesh to wage relentless war against believers. We should look forward to these wars instead of wishing them away because they bring out our potential and stir up the courage in us. The exciting thing about afflictions and conflicts is their glorious outcome. The Bible assures us of a victorious end in the war against satan and the flesh. The glory that is yet to be revealed in the saints is enough motivation for us to endure to the end.

    16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

    17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;

    18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

    2 Corinthians 4:16-18

    With the ultimate eternal weight of glory in view, the apostle Paul referred to his trials as light affliction. He did not see his afflictions as working against him but for him – he said, … our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us…. Today’s believers frown on suffering and whine in times
