Chapter 1
It was cold that night in London in December 1987. A burst of lightening brightened the dark sky. The following thunder rattled the rooftop of Jade’s house. Rain fell down hard, crushing the leaves of growing trees in the back garden. Jade sank deep into his rocking chair next to his fireplace and stared out his window. Recollections of puzzled words lingered in Jade’s mind as he watched the rain smash against the windowpanes. Another burst of lightening brightened the dark sky, immediately followed by a low rumble. Jade felt one with nature at that moment. He would shout loudly with each thunder roar. Then he sank deeper in his rocking chair, drowning in his lonesome thoughts.
One year had elapsed since Jade’s stepfather passed away and flashes of his step father’s dialogue were encrypted in his mind. The memory was so real that Jade could still smell the Old Spice aftershave that his stepfather used to apply and could still hear his deep, resonating voice.
Words: [floated in Jade’s mind in disrupted phrases] My beloved son, I bestow upon you my secret gift. I give you this key where you will find your heart’s desire that has been hidden from you for all these years. You will discover your shadows, your inner voices who will accompany you throughout your journey.
Jade lay in his rocking chair by the fireside remembering his stepfather’s words when the shadows crept in on him like thieves in the night. He was unable to see them but could only hear their voices in his head.
Fear: [in a shaky voice] Your stepfather, Adonis, found you trembling outside his door when you were just a few months old. You claim that you adored your stepfather, yet not a tear is shed from your hard eyes. You are sizzling with rage, yet not a sound is heard from your still mouth. You have abandoned your own heart, yet it is beating to remind you that you are still alive. You were driving fast that day when you lost control and crashed into that van. Adonis begged you to decelerate, yet you continued.
Jade began to sweat profusely, trying desperately to slow down his racing heartbeat. He almost had a panic attack but was instantly saved by the shadow of Love.
Love: [tenderly] My dear Fear, Jade is mourning the loss of Adonis. Feeling numb is one of the phases of grieving, and everyone grieves in their own way. I beg of you to forget this horrific catastrophe and stop making him feel guilty for this unintentional accident. The death of your stepfather is not your fault, Jade.
Jade, still not believing what he was hearing, felt hypnotized after listening to these comforting words, and his heartbeat slowed down. A soothing sensation spread all over his body.
Ego: [proudly] I agree with Love, and I think the shadow of Fear should back off.
Love: [gently] Remember your stepfather’s words, Jade. He said you have the power to get whatever you wish for if you know the secret and I will help you. What is your wish, Jade?
Jade: [sounds tired] I am exhausted, starving, and cannot think clearly. I am still shocked after the accident. I don’t know what I want from life anymore. Nothing makes me happy any longer. Sometimes I feel it is difficult for me to perform even the trivial daily tasks of life like brushing my teeth. What is wrong with me?
Love: [reassuringly] Nothing is wrong with you, Jade. You are just a bit depressed after all the unfortunate events of last year and the betrayal of your beloved Rose. Your negative energy has a spiral effect, and you have just been attracting more of the same misfortune since your stepfather’s death. Change your state to a happy one and watch how you will start attracting more positive events. What do you feel like having now?
Jade: [feels uplifted after listening to the shadow of Love] I feel like having my favorite chocolate cake. They say chocolate may be responsible for some of the pleasurable feelings you get because it releases natural feel-good chemicals in your brain, and I want to feel good for a change.
Fear: [mockingly] Chocolate also makes you fat, and, anyway, all the shops are closed now. Jade, you are such a spoiled brat. Why don’t you get up from your lazy chair and look for a new job? I am not sure if they give acting roles to losers.
Somehow the shadow of Fear always found a way to irritate Jade and purposely instilled guilt and despair in his conscious.
Jade: [with an angry voice as though he were scolding the shadow of Fear] Be quiet, Fear, for God’s sake…I want to meditate now. Please give me space to think for myself without the noise of your constant nagging.
Jade sank deeper in his rocking chair by
