About this ebook
"Mountains Don’t Grow Back" is a rhythmic and inspirational nonfiction picture book that introduces children to environmentalism, mining and renewable energies. The story follows a family on a road trip as they drive through the mountains. The children notice a strip mining site and a conversation on the destruction of the mountain ensues. The children discuss different ways to "fix" the mountain as well as the uses of mining materials. The story crescendos as the children learn about renewable energies and sustainable practices. The underlying theme is presented towards the end: "Do we need all these things for so short of time? When it doesn't grow back, is it really 'fine'?"
The bold and vibrant illustrations gently bring to life a very intense reality. Animals are "hidden" throughout and the sun constantly shines, as the book playfully explores human impact on the planet. The book's upbeat and empowering message encourages children to take a positive action in their environment.
Created for children aged 5 to 8, the book is ideal to spark a deeper discussion. A short glossary links children to more information on Wikipedia, encouraging deeper exploration.
