Introduction
The train is a wonderful way to travel, even internationally, and it allows you to see the beautiful countryside as you go. North America covers a great deal of land mass from the southern tip of Mexico to the big, bold, rugged state of Alaska, with the continental United States and Canada in between. In North America, one can just about go from the equator to the Arctic Circle without ever having to hop on an airplane or a boat. The train is a great way to relax as you travel, stop, and enjoy the local culture before moving on to the next destination.
North America covers about 9,540,000 square miles of land, or 24,709,000 square kilometers. That is huge—one train trip most likely would not cover all that in a short amount of time. If you plan your trip, you can probably see some great highlights from north to south with ease. It would take several trips to see it all, but it is very possible on a train.
See the Natural Wonders of North America
North America holds some of the world's most spectacular and beautiful spots. Travel by train to see these glorious natural creations.
Banff National Park
Banff National Park is located in the Canadian Rockies amidst beautiful mountain lakes and the rugged terrain that makes up the Rocky Mountains. The snowcapped mountain peaks overlook giant glaciers that hug the evergreen forests and meadows below. Enjoy the massive amount of large wildlife, such as the grizzly bear, black bear, caribou, elk, and even bighorn sheep.
Carlsbad Caverns
Travel to New Mexico, USA and visit one of the largest natural caverns called Carlsbad Caverns, with a ceiling that sits about twenty stories above the floor. Carlsbad Caverns is made up of 118 different caves (explored) and probably many others unexplored. There are around thirty miles of caverns man has seen with another three hundred miles yet discovered. Located in the midst of a desert mountain in the southwest US, it is one of the natural wonders of North America. Visitors will get to see the many thousands of bats that call the cave home during the winter months.
Chichen Itza
Situated on the Yucatan Peninsula, the Mayan ruins contain the grand Chichen Itza Pyramid. The area is riddled with sites and structures and is worthy of a visit to see a natural wonder of North America. The structure was a thriving area from about 200 AD until 1000 AD or so. It was during the tenth century that the area became desolate and jungle growth overtook the once-lively location. Now it is a tourist attraction.
Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon sits in the southwest state of Arizona, situated close to the Colorado border. This gorge took millions of years to form in the bedrock, forged by the once-raging Colorado River. The canyon is 277 miles in length and in places is about 18 miles wide. The canyon floor sits about a mile from the top rim, making it one breathtaking view.
The peak tourist season for the Grand Canyon goes from June to September, though May and October are also pleasant times to visit.
Great Lakes
The Great Lakes of Ontario, Huron, Erie, Superior, and Michigan form the northern border of the USA and Canada. These freshwater lakes are huge; you cannot see across to the other side. Take a cruise on a ship and see these wonders, looking out over the beautiful northern United States and southern Canada.
Mount McKinley
Mount McKinley is the highest peak in North America. Located in the center of Denali National Park, Alaska, it soars some 20,237 feet in the air, staying snowcapped year round. Alaska has several trains that tour through Denali and around the area.
New York City
New York City sits near the northeast corner of the United States, on the eastern shore of the Atlantic Ocean. New York City (also called the Big Apple) has the largest population of all the cities in the USA. Manhattan is the most popular of the boroughs that make up the entire city. Surrounded by the Hudson Bay and the Hudson River, Manhattan holds the most skyscrapers and many famous landmarks, like the Empire State Building and the site of the Twin Towers that fell in 2001. The Statute of Liberty and Ellis Island sit in the New York Harbor, accessible by ferry.
Niagara Falls
The great Niagara Falls forms the border between upper state New York and Ontario Canada. It is the largest waterfall in North America. The best time to visit is during the summer months when the weather is warmer and the roads are clear of ice.
Teotihuacan
Teotihuacan sits close to Mexico City; a giant, 27-story structure is called the Pyramid of the Sun. Another nearby is called the Pyramid of the Moon. These pyramids date back to the second century BC, pre-Aztec structures. Take a train to Mexico City, then a bus or car to Teotihuacan.
Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park is located in northern California, USA. It is a giant valley, surrounded by the mountains and cliffs that make up the giant sequoia trees that date back to before Christ. The sequoia trees first sprouted during the time of the Roman Empire. Yosemite's largest mountain soars some 3,600 feet above the valley. The park has one of the highest waterfalls, called Bridalveil Falls, where the water plunges 620 feet over the ledge in a spray that resembles a bridal veil. Another waterfall, called Yosemite Falls, plummets some 240 stories, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in the world.
Other Highlights of North America
There are many noteworthy spots in North America deserving of a visit. Here are a few more to consider when planning a train trip:
East and west coasts of Mexico
Gulf coast of Florida
Savannah, Georgia
Mount Rushmore, North Dakota
San Diego, California
